Bassfield’s sting too strong for Loyd Star

BASSFIELD – In the second round of the Class 2A state footballplayoffs, the Bassfield Yellow Jacket proved to have more stingthan the Loyd Star Hornets. Bassfield eliminated Loyd Star 47-7Friday on Howard Willoughby Field and advances to the third roundof the playoffs.
“Bassfield has a great football team and has a lot of talent,”said Loyd Star head football coach Ryan Ross following the game.”We managed to hold them to 13 plays in the first half, but theflip side of that was they scored 27 points on our mistakes.
“We can’t spot them that and expect to come back,” continuedRoss. “Overall, I am proud of the guys on what they accomplishedthis year. Our senior class were great leaders for us, which was akey to our success. Now, we must prepare and work on nextyear.”
Loyd Star finishes the season with a 10-2 record. Bassfieldimproved to 11-2.
“Loyd Star did a good job and was well prepared, but our defensecame up big for us,” said Bassfield head coach Lance Mancuso. “Wemanaged to get some points on defense from Loyd Star’s mistakes andtake the load of our offense. I’m proud of my guys, they playedhard on both sides of the ball. We are currently riding an 11-gamewin streak.”
Josh Myers directed the Bassfield running game with 11 carriesfor 112 yards and a touchdown. In the air, quarterback Carvey Mageecompleted a perfect 7 of 7 passes for 139 yards and 4 TDs.
Bassfield scored at the 2:29 mark in the first quarter whenDominick Island caught a 12-yard pass from Magee. Mario Daggan made5 out of 7 extra point kicks. The Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 leadover the Hornets.
In the second quarter, Bassfield collected 3 touchdowns for 20points and pushed its lead to 27-0 at the half. Daggan returns apass interception 93 yards for a touchdown, Justin Penn returned afumble 48 yards for a TD and Magee connected with Wilbur Myers fora 33-yard strike for 6 points.
The Yellow Jackets scored 14 points in the third quarter to takea 41-0 lead over the Hornets. Magee hit Terry Copeland for 59-yardand 14-yard TDs.
With 11:44 remaining in the game, Bassfield added another TD ona 63-yard run by Josh Myers for the 47-0 lead.
Loyd Star scored on a 6-yard plunge by Tradareous Wilsonfollowed by a Chris Buie extra point kick with 6:52 left on theclock, cutting he deficit to 47-7.
Wilson was the leading scorer for Loyd Star with 12 rushes for96 yards. Marquis Hayes rushed for 55 yards on 12 carries.Quarterback Joseph Shelby rushed 16 times for 37 yards and was 1-4in the air with a 13-yard pass to McKinley Hamilton.
Defensively, T.J. Floyd led the Hornets with 9 tackles. KoreyAllen and David Fields made 7 tackles apiece. Making 5 stops wasMarquis Sims. Recovering a fumble each were Travis Sorrels, AnthonyThompson and Dylan Smith.
