BA roars past Centreville

Junior center Anna Katelyn Mangold fired in 14 points, pulleddown 7 rebounds and made 3 steals Tuesday night to spark the hostBrookhaven Academy Lady Cougars to a 61-27 win over the CentrevilleAcademy Lady Tigers in varsity basketball action in John R. GrayGymnasium.

In the varsity boys game, Josh Reed’s 14 points, 5 rebounds and4 steals powered the Cougars to a 69-41 victory over theTigers.

BA travels to Mendenhall Thursday to face Simpson County. Thefirst of four games begins at 4 p.m.

Brookhaven 61, Centreville 27

The Lady Cougars (8-1) pounced on the Lady Tigers (1-6) for a23-7 lead in the first quarter. At halftime, Brookhaven commanded a25-point, 39-14, lead.

“We played pretty good defensively,” said BA girls basketballcoach Barry Gray following the win. “We shared the ball realwell.”

Contributing to the BA win with 11 points was guard TerahWinborne. Mary Lindsey Magee netted 10 points. Laura Beth Wrightscored 8 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and made 3 steals. Collecting 8points, 4 steals and 3 assists was Anna Lofton.

Brookhaven 69, Centreville 41

The Cougars (5-2) took advantage of a small Tiger squad (6players) to take a 19-2, first-quarter lead. At the half, BA led43-14.

“Centreville Academy came in short-handed,” said BA boys coachDale Watts. “Jamison (Powell) scored the first 10 points of thegame. We are going to have a good team.”

Adding support to the Cougar win with 13 points, including 2treys, was freshman Gage Posey. Powell finished with 12 points.Mark Rushing pumped in 10 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. BrockSmith also scored 10 points and made 3 steals.

Jamie Dezendorf paced Centreville with 17 points. Ethan Nolandfinished with eight points.

Junior high action

The Lady Cougars held off the Lady Tigers for a 26-19 win.Leading BA with 14 points was Lindsey Winborne, followed by Mary E.Jordan with 9.

Centreville got 9 points from Terri Rouse.

The BA boys marched to a 57-36 victory over CA. Will Hickmannetted 19 points to lead the Cougars. Adding support with 15 pointswas Alex Gray, followed by Zac Smith with 10.

The Tigers were led by Corey Gaulden with 16 points. Netting 13points was Randy Bell.
