Officials eye additional suspect in robberies

A fourth arrest has been made in a series of burglaries thattook place in Brookhaven through November and early December,Brookhaven police said Wednesday.

Assistant Chief Nolan Jones said Jeremy David Smith, 18, of 2602Turpin Road, was charged with two counts of burglary in a crimespree that left three other Brookhaven men in jail on six counts ofburglary and a count of attempted burglary each.

Joshua Scott Martin, 17, of 306 East Meadowbrook Dr.; Gerald B.Nugent, 17, of 1362 Union St. Apt. 15C; and Donald JamesBessenette, of 1362 Union St. Apt. 16B, were all arrested last weekin the series of crimes.

Officials said the three men previously arrested were implicatedin burglaries of the Brookhaven Moose Lodge twice, the offices ofGraceland Buildings and Brookhaven Portable Buildings, SelectSigns, and the concession stand at the baseball park at LipseyMiddle School, all since November 4. They also attempted to enterDude’s Biscuits through a broken rear window, but wereunsuccessful.

Jones said Smith was arrested for his role in the burglaries atthe Lipsey concession stand and Graceland Portable Buildings.

One of the suspects was spotted in a surveillance video, whichled to the arrests of the other suspects, Jones said.

“I think this is going to be it,” Jones said, explaining that heexpects no further arrests in the case.

Meanwhile, police are still following leads on an armed robberythat took place around lunchtime Monday at Lincoln Inn and Suites.Officials said black males, one in a white “hoodie” and one in adew rag, used a gun to hold up the worker behind the counter andtake an undisclosed amount of money.
