Man killed in Sunday auto mishap

A Sunday evening car accident claimed the life of a 21-year-oldLawrence County man, and two women are being treated for theirinjuries at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, officialssaid Monday.

Lawrence County Coroner Sydney Fortenberry said James AnthonyRutland, 21, of 1627 Carmel-New Hope Road, was killed when he lostcontrol of his pickup truck at Dipping Vat Curve.

“He was driving a standard-sized pickup truck, and he came intothe curve,” Fortenberry said. “He lost control and wound up goingout into the woods.”

Officials said the initial call of the accident came in at 5:10p.m. Sunday. Rutland was taken to Lawrence County Hospital byambulance, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency roomaround 6 p.m.

Fortenberry said there were three passengers in the vehicle, andall of them were ejected or partially ejected.

A spokesperson for the Lawrence County Hospital said JoeyDaniels, age unavailable, was treated and released.

Emily Bourne and Christian Sauls, ages also unavailable, wereboth transferred to UMC. Hospital officials said Bourne is in goodcondition, and Sauls’ condition was unavailable.

Monticello Fire Chief Robert Patterson said the fire departmentresponded to the call, and the Jaws of Life were used to free apartially ejected passenger.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department was unable to releaseany information on the accident before press time.
