Hornets, Lady ‘Cats notch wins

BOGUE CHITTO – The Loyd Star Hornets and Bogue Chitto Bobcatsclashed again Monday night after playing each other Saturday nightin the third round of the Lincoln County Round-Robin Tournament atEnterprise. The results were the same as Bogue Chitto’s Lady ‘Catsrallied for a 61-40 win and the Hornets rolled to a 66-44 triumphin R.L. “Bob” Calhoun Gymnasium.

Loyd Star visits Enterprise Thursday night for Division 6-2Aaction. Friday’s junior high games with Enterprise have beencanceled.

Bogue Chitto resumes play Friday night, hosting Sebastopol for aDivision 7-1A varsity twinbill.

The Lady ‘Cats (13-1), coached by ChristiTerrell, fell behind Loyd Star 18-13 in the first quarter but theydominated the rest of the game, breaking a 23-23 halftime knot witha 14-5, third-quarter surge.

Guards Darcy Miller and Shelby Tobias direct the victory with 16points each. Miller also had 6 steals and 4 rebounds. Tobiasgrabbed 6 rebounds.

Josie Porter dished out 6 assists in the win and Aneshia Dilloncontributed 7 rebounds.

“We started off flat in the first half and got in foul trouble,”said Coach Terrell. “We stepped up in the fourth quarter and wemade 12 of 13 at the free throw line.”

Terrell’s Lady ‘Cats were fresh from winning the Lincoln CountyRound-Robin.

The Lady Hornets (1-8), coached by Billy Vaughn, started strongbut ran out of gas. Sophomore post Tyrisha Patterson led Loyd Starwith 18 points and 16 points, plus 2 blocked shots. Anna Brooks had13 rebounds and 7 assists. Leah Britt and Sarah Falvey each made 4assists. Erica Smith made 3 steals.

“We played a good first quarter but we struggled the rest of thegame,” said Coach Vaughn. “We showed improvement but we still needto get a lot better.”

The Hornets (9-0) raced to a 21-8, first-quarter lead and wereup 38-20 at halftime. They were directed by Joseph Shelby’s 21points and 9 rebounds. Glenn Thomas added 14 points and 6rebounds.

Playmaker Julius Whittaker made 7 steals and 5 steals in thevictory. The Hornets are fresh from winning the Lincoln CountyRound-Robin.

“We didn’t play to our potential but we were glad to get thewin,” said Loyd Star coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “We managed to subother players and get them some experience.”

“Now we must get ready for Enterprise.”

The Bobcats (5-9) were led by Byron Kersee’s 9 points and 5rebounds. Justin London grabbed 11 rebounds, made 2 steals and 2assists.

“We were not focused tonight,” said BC first-year head coachJeremy Harrell. “We will work hard tomorrow to prepare for ourfirst district game Friday.”

Junior Varsity Results

In a preliminary JV girls game, Bogue Chitto prevailed 22-14 asKiana Price scored 10 points and Adriene Wallace.

Loyd Star got 3 points each from Natalie Keene and MaggieRedd.

In a JV boys game, the Bobcats beat the Hornets 40-34, led byGermis Martin’s 13 points. Greg Turner added 8 points.

Loyd Star got 15 points from Caleb Smith and 7 from HunterHooge.
