Chaffin’s 21 points leads Cougars to tourney crown

Sidney Chaffin’s game-high 21 points and 4 assists helped powerthe Brookhaven Academy Cougars to a 64-57 win over the BowlingGreen Buccaneers Wednesday night in the championship game of the BAHoliday Classic at John R. Gray Gymnasium.

In the girls championship game, missed free throw costs the BAgirls who fell to East Rankin Patriots 51-45 in overtime. The LadyCougars were 9 of 18 on the night, going 0-4 in the final minute ofregulation.

In the consolation games, the Hillcrest Christian boys whippedSimpson County Academy 65-51 and the Hillcrest girls held offBowling Green for a 46-37 win.

Brookhaven Academy visits Bowling Green Tuesday night.

Brookhaven Acad. 64, B. Green 57

The Cougars (12-4) jumped on the Bucs 24-9 in the first quarterbut Bowling Green chipped away at the lead and cut it to 35-25 atthe half. Going into the final frame, the hosts led the visitors by7 points, 42-35.

“I was very pleased with them,” said BA boys coach Dale Wattsfollowing the win. “We have come a long way. Christian Keeneresponded well. We gave up too many offensive rebounds but ourintensity was good.”

Contributing to the BA win 18 points and 5 rebounds was JakeReed. Jamison Powell finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

For Pat King’s Bucs, Jaron Edwards led the way with 20 points.Netting 15 points was Shod Fortenberry. Colton Owens finished with11.

East Rankin 51, Brookhaven Acad. 45

The girls were tied 40-40 at the end of regulation. East Rankinoutscored BA 11-5 in the 4-minute overtimes for the win.

“It was a good game,” said BA girls coach Barry Gray. “Terah(Winborne) did a good job defending Brooke Rhodes.” (Rhodes washeld to 10 points).

Winborne led BA with 20 points, made 2 steals and had 3 assists.Laura Beth Wright followed with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 stealsfor the Lady Cougars.

“I thought we played really well,” said East Rankin girls coachMichael McAnally. “BA defended us well. They made it tough for us.Kaitlyn Coghlan stepped up and made the plays.”

Coghlan led East Rankin with 21 points.

Hillcrest 65, Simpson 51

Leading Hillcrest with 25 points was Austin Hartzog.

Simpson was led by Justin Griffin with 18 points followed byDylan Kennedy with 13.

Hillcrest 46, Bowling Green 37

Karly Kliesch and Jessica Griffin led Hillcrest with 14 pointsapiece.

Bowling Green got 12 points from Makayla Dykes.
