Wesson Lady Cobras sack Hinds AHS

WESSON – With Wesson’s leading scorer Ann Shelby Davis sittingout the third quarter because of foul trouble, the rest of the LadyCobras picked up the slack and put together a huge 53-37 Region6-2A win over the Hinds AHS Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night. Davisfinished with 8 points in the game.
In the varsity boys game, Hinds AHS’s fast-paced running offensewas too much for Wesson’s Cobras who fell to the Bulldogs84-68.
Wesson travels to Loyd Star Friday night for more region action.A junior varsity girls game kicks off the 4-game series beginningat 4 p.m.
Wesson 53, Hinds AHS 37
The Lady Cobras (14-4, 4-0) jumped on Hinds AHS (12-7, 3-1) inthe first quarter to put together a 10-3 lead. A 15-6second-quarter run by Wesson gave the hosts a 25-9 lead going intothe half. Going into the final frame, the Lady Cobras held an18-point, 38-20, advantage over the Lady Bulldogs.
“We dominated them defensively,” said Wesson girls coach HughWebb after the win. “I can’t say enough about how well our defenseplayed. We took away their perimeter shooting.
“Macie Case played her best game of the season,” continued Webb.”Shaunaty Walker, Lychrissa Harris and Davis shut down Hinds’Eugena Grigsby,” holding her to 15 points.
Powering Wesson was Ansley Schimmel with 12 points. Walkerfinished with a double-double, 11 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blockedshots. Chelsea Lucas collected 10 points. Case made 2 steals andhad 5 assists.
“Wesson was better prepared tonight,” said Hinds AHS coach BruceBaker. “They are well disciplined. Wesson just played better. Itwill take a better effort for us to beat them next time.”
Following Grigsby in scoring for Hinds AHS was Kyla Marshallwith 6 points.
Hinds AHS 84, Wesson 68
Powering the Bulldogs (16-3, 4-0) to the win was Trevis Thomaswith a game-high 34 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Firingin 24 points was Cornelius Harris.
Hinds AHS went up on Wesson 24-14 in the first quarter. Athalftime, the Bulldogs commanded a 51-34 lead.
“We cut the deficit to 14 points in the third quarter butcouldn’t stop them,” said Wesson boys coach Ron Kessler. “I amproud of the guys. We hung in there with them. But we missed toomany early shots and had too many turnovers early in the game.”
Directing the Cobras (9-11, 3-1) with 18 points, 5 rebounds and3 steals was Tyler Lumley. Terry Brown and Gib Britt (4 treys)collected 14 points apiece. Brown grabbed 4 rebounds.
“We piddled around in the first quarter,” said Hinds AHS coachKeith Williams. “Keeslee Stewart (9 points) got hurt and our otherplayers took up the slack. Harris stepped up. Thomas is an up andcoming player.”
Junior varsity action
The Wesson girls knocked off Hinds AHS 34-24, powered by ElsieMullins game-high 11 points. Dylana Harris followed with 8points.
Hinds AHS got 6 points apiece from Croatia Williams and NikitaBrewer.
