Man in custody after fleeing license checkpoint

A Hazlehurst man was jailed but uninjured after wrecking his carwhile leading law enforcement officials on a chase up Old Highway51 Friday afternoon.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Steven Sanders, 28, of12055 Port Gibson Road, started the chase when he ran from adriver’s license checkpoint set up just north of the railroadtracks on Old Highway 51.

“They were down there on Old 51 doing a checkpoint and he hadactually stopped,” Rushing said. “Whenever the deputy walked backto his car to check his information, he took off on them.”

The pursuit went up the highway almost to Wesson, Lincoln CountyConstable Post One Kelly Porter said. Officials said Sanders ranhis white Ford Taurus station wagon off the road when he attemptedto make a sharp turn into a driveway.

“They just went that short piece up the road, and he tried toturn up in that driveway and went into the bushes,” Rushing said.”He took off and after a short foot pursuit he wasapprehended.”

Rushing said officials are not exactly sure why Sanders ran, butthat he did have a warrant for failure to appear.

“That’s a good question,” Rushing said. “You just never knowwhat people are thinking when they run.”

Rushing said Sanders’ license had been suspended for his failureto appear. In addition, the tag on his car was not the correcttag.

Sanders was charged with driving with a suspended license,failure to yield to blue lights, switched tag, resisting arrest, noproof of insurance and no seatbelt.
