Lady Cobras rule region

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras were repeaters Monday night,defeating the Hinds AHS Lady Bulldogs 53-37 on their way tocapturing their second straight Region 6-2A championship before apartisan home crowd.

In the consolation girls contest, Loyd Star held off Puckett for a47-46 victory.

The games were postponed a day due to the weather conditions lastThursday and Friday.

In the girls first round of the South 2A playoff games Wednesdaynight at 7 p.m., Wesson (24-6) entertains Stringer and Loyd Star(8-16) travels to Taylorsville.

Wesson 53, Hinds AHS 37

“We usually play man-to-man, but we played Hinds in a half-courtpress,” said Wesson girls coach Hugh Webb after the win. “Overall,it was one of our best defensive efforts. Shauntay Walker andLychrissa Harris did a great job guarding (Eugena) Grigsby.”

Wesson’s Ann Shelby Davis was named Player of the Year and led theLady Cobras with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Walker and DanielleTadlock netted 10 points apiece. Walker also collected 10 reboundsand made 3 steals.

The Lady Cobras led the Lady Bulldogs 9-6 in the first quarter andpushed their lead to 23-17 at halftime. Wesson commanded a16-point, 37-21, lead over Hinds AHS going into the fourthquarter.

The Lady Bulldogs (19-8) were led by Grigsby with 18 points and 5assists. Leanna Washington finished with 10 points and pulled down11 rebounds.

“I’d like to thank Coach K (Kessler) for all his help during myillness,” added Webb. “He’s a strength to me and my girls.”

Loyd Star 47, Puckett 46

In the final four seconds of the game, Loyd Star’s Erica Smith went1-for-2 from the free throw line breaking a 46-all tie and givingthe Lady Hornets a 47-46 lead. Leah Britt tied the game 46-46 on abucket with 10 seconds remaining. Jordan Williams picked off a LadyBulldog pass at mid-court with two seconds left and time expiredgiving Loyd Star the win.

“Leah Britt’s shot was big,” said Loyd Star girls coach BillyVaughn. “We kept on fighting.”

Leading Loyd Star with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists wasErica Smith. Tyrisha Patterson fired in 12 points and pulled down12 rebounds. Netting 10 points was Courtney Watts.

Courtney Oster directed Hinds AHS with 19 points. Skyla Meek andErica Fletcher added 6 points apiece.
