Nola home lost in Thursday blaze

When a home at 2858 Nola Road caught on fire, neighbors andfriends gathered around to help until the manpower could arrivefrom the county fire departments.

“I know them, they’re my friends,” said Johnny London, who took ahose line to the front door of the double-wide trailer to fight thefire from beneath the billowing smoke.

Officials from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department said thecall came in to 911 just before 11 a.m. when neighbors spottedheavy smoke coming from the home.

Firefighters on the scene said the owners were not at home at thetime of the burn. The home was owned by Cory Brice.

When Heuck’s Retreat Volunteer Fire Department units arrived onscene, heavy smoke was showing, but the fire inside quickly spreadthroughout the structure.

Lincoln County Fire Coordinator Clifford Galey said the homeappeared to be destroyed.

“Apparently it was a total loss,” he said.

With mutual aid coming from five other departments around thecounty, water was an issue for a short time when Heuck’s Retreatand Hog Chain Fire Department’s trucks, which were first on scene,ran out of water.

Galey said Zetus, Bogue Chitto, New Sight and East LincolnVolunteer Fire Departments were also called out to bring water,officials said.

The burn rekindled later Thursday afternoon, but only Heuck’sRetreat had to respond to the call to get it put out.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said there will be a routineinvestigation to determine the cause of the blaze.
