Charles R. Jacobs

Services for Charles Robinson Jacobs, of Brookhaven, are 4 p.m.Saturday, Feb. 27, at First United Methodist Church of Brookhaven.He will be buried on Editors’ Row in Rosehill Cemetery. Henry WareHobbs named the location where newspaper editors have been laid torest.

Visitation is Friday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Riverwood FamilyFuneral Service.

Mr. Jacobs, 91, died Feb. 24, 2010, in Brookhaven. He was born onDec. 4, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., to Charles Robinson Jacobs and AmyOrton Jacobs.

Mr. Jacobs served as owner, editor and publisher of severaldifferent newspapers including the Meredith News in Meredith, N.H.;the Wauseon Republican in Wauseon, Ohio; and The DAILY LEADER, inBrookhaven.

Mr. Jacobs was a graduate of Tome School in Port Deposit, Md. Heattended the University of Virginia before joining the service in1941, where he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church ofBrookhaven.

An avid boater he enjoyed cruising the waterways of Lake Michigan,Florida and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Lakes Pontchartrain andMaurepas near New Orleans in his beloved Calypso III. At a muchyounger age in the late 1930s, he and a group of friends ventureddown the Mississippi River on a trip from Chicago to Memphis. Thetrip was abandoned south of St Louis when the sea worthiness oftheir vessel came into question. In later years he took upfurniture making of “only fine antiques,” many built of wood fromWhitworth College and Lampton Auditorium. Numerous homes in thearea have samples of his work.

An avid traveler he ventured through all corners of the world fromAfrica, to Nepal, throughout Europe, Central and South America.Those travels brought him in contact with government officials inmany of those areas – a highlight being an interview with PrimeMinister Indira Gandhi.

A student of politics, he was interested in state and nationalpolitical matters using his regular column “Generally Speaking” topoke and prod at events of the day.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Lucy GorhamBergen, of South Glastonbury, Ct.; and an infant son, Thomas OrtonJacobs of Wauseon, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Patterson Jacobs, ofBrookhaven; his sons, Randall Woodruff Jacobs and wife FontaineRichbourg Jacobs, of Houston, Texas, Sheldon Truesdale Jacobs, ofJackson, and William Orton Jacobs and wife Amy, of Brookhaven; histwo grandchildren, Ann Kirkpatrick Jacobs and Meredith AlexanderJacobs, both of Brookhaven; a niece, Dale Gorham Carstens andhusband Jeffery, of South Glastonbury, Ct; and a nephew, WillettNoble Gorham and wife Judith, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Tucson,Ariz.; and a host of grand-nieces spread across the country.

Moses Leroy Bates Sr.

Services for Moses Leroy Bates Sr., of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m.Saturday, Feb. 27, at Alexander Junior High Auditorium inBrookhaven, with burial in Carver Heights Cemetery. R.E. TylerFuneral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Friday from noon until 8 p.m. at the funeral home,with family present from 6 until 8 p.m.

Mr. Bates, 87, died Feb. 19, 2010, at his residence. He was born inLincoln County on Nov. 14, 1922, to the Rev. Charlie Bates andPearlie Stovall Bates.

He was retired from his work as a self-employed contractor. He wasa member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Brookhaven.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sons, Willie E. BatesSr., Jules A. Bates Sr., Ellary Bates and Turone F. Bates Sr.; hisdaughter, Deborah Bates; his brothers, Jonas Bates, J.C. Bates,C.B. Bates, and Sinclair Brister; and his stepbrother, T.C. May, ofBrookhaven.

Survivors are his wife, Lucille Hill Bates, of Brookhaven; hissons, Paul L. Bates Sr., of Hazlehurst, Terry L. Bates Sr., MosesL. Bates Jr. and Darryl A. Bates, all of Brookhaven, Jerry D. Clifton Earl Chisholm

Services for Clifton Earl Chisholm, of Denham Springs, La., are 11a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb,with burial in Montgomery Cemetery in Lincoln County.

Visitation is Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home, andon Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mr. Chisholm, 75, died Feb. 23, 2010, at his residence. He was bornin Franklin County on Jan. 20, 1935, to William and AlineChisholm.

He was retired from his family business, Cliff’s Plumbing, and thenworked part time with his son at T-N-T Plumbing.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, Frank,Junior and Prentiss; and his grandsons, John Clifton and DeWayneChisholm.

Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Shirley Freeman Chisholm; hissons, Tony Chisholm and Terry Chisholm; his daughters, TammyWilleford and Tracy Bruno; his brother, James Chisholm; his sister,Geraldine Freeman; his eight grandchildren and ninegreat-grandchildren; and many other special relatives, friends andneighbors.

Pauline B. Robbins

Services for Pauline B. Robbins, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m.,Saturday, Feb. 27, at Bethel Temple Pentecostal Church with burialin Pleasant Ridge Pentecostal Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. at Brookhaven Funeral Homeon Natchez Drive.

Mrs. Robbins, 77, died Feb. 24, 2010, at Mississippi BaptistMemorial Hospital in Jackson. She was born on Dec. 8, 1933, to OtisC. Britt and Effie Gill Britt.

She was a member of Bethel Temple Pentecostal Church.

Pauline Robbins or Polly, as she was known to her friends, filledher days with love and service to those around her. She laboredunder the title of an in-home caregiver, but this would better fitas her calling than her job. Her life, in a word, was passion.Whether it was her passion for traveling to exotic places, herunwavering commitment to her friends, or her passion for the Godshe served. Polly had a special word for her friends. She calledthem “people I know” for to know Polly was to have a friend. Wethank God today for three of these friends, which have proven to besoul companions: Loretta Callender, Mary Bennett and BobGibson.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Otis A.Robbins; her stepbrother, Ronnie Seay; and a stepdaughter, DebraRobbins.

Survivors include her sons, Bobby Dale Criswell, of San Antonio,Texas; her stepsons, Ottis Lee Robbins, of Tylertown, and CurtisDale Robbins, of Brookhaven; her daughter, Sandy Terry, of Wesson;her stepsister, Sherry Jones, of Vidalia, La.; her sister-in-law,Lola Britt Henserling, of Wesson; 10 grandchildren; and 10great-grandchildren.

Sandra ‘Sandy’ Lynn Simpson

Services for Sandra “Sandy” Lynn Simpson, of Brookhaven, are 2 p.m.Sunday, Feb. 28, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service Chapel, withburial in Riverwood Memorial Park

Visitation is Saturday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeralhome.

Miss Simpson, 38, died Feb. 24, 2010, at North Oaks Hospital inHammond, La. She was born on Aug. 17, 1971, to James Daniel Simpsonand Ruby Moore Simpson.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her grandfathers, J.W. Moore, of UnionChurch, and Jesse Dee Simpson of Port Gibson; and her cousin,Melvin O’Neal.

Survivors are her parents; her sister, Amy Simpson Heard andhusband Jaymie, of Wesson; her grandmothers, Stella Moore and RuthRussum, both of Brookhaven; special family members, Bobby and JimmyMoore, and Tom Twiner; and many other family members.

Donations may be made in her memory to Pleasant Grove UnitedMethodist Church.

Shirley Gwendylon Smith

Services for Shirley Gwendylon Smith, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m.,Saturday, Feb. 27, at Gum Grove Baptist Church, Brookhaven, withburial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. Friday, at Riverwood FamilyFuneral Service.

Mrs. Smith, 65, died Feb. 24, 2010, at her residence. She was bornon Oct. 20, 1944, to Lawrence Dana Higginbotham and DorothyPrestridge Higginbotham Gauthe.

She was a retired private duty sitter for 22 years and a member ofGum Grove Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her stepfather, ClaudeGauthe.

Survivors include her husband, Charles “Keith” Smith, ofBrookhaven; her sons, Clay Lewis and Clint Lewis and wife Fran; herdaughter Lee Dawson Wilson and husband, Joey; her brothers, Davidand Jimmy Higginbotham; her five grandchildren, Millane, Sidney andSawyer Lewis and Olivia and Dawson Wilson; a host of nieces andnephews; and a special friend, Jessie Carwyle.
