Co-Lin sweeps Rend Lake

WESSON – Bud Britt’s 2-RBI single in the bottom of the seventhinning drove in the tying and go-ahead runs to give the Co-LinWolves a 6-5 comeback win over the Rend Lake Warriors of Ina, Ill.,Saturday afternoon.

In the first game at Sullivan Field, Kendall Logan drilled a 2-runhome run and Caleb McMinn smashed a solo homer to lead the Wolvesin a 4-0 win over the Warriors.

Rend Lake’s Warriors were the NJCAA Region XXIV champions in 1997,1999 and 2008.

The Wolves (11-8) have won 5 of their last 6 games.

Co-Lin head coach Keith Case said, “I thought our guys did a greatjob staying in the ball game. We faced two quality armstoday.”

Co-Lin 4, Rend Lake 0

McMinn recorded his home run in the first inning to give Co-Lin a1-0 lead over Rend Lake.

In the bottom of the fifth, DH Matthew Freeman led off for theWolves with a single followed by Logan‘s homer for a 3-0 lead.Catcher Tyler Hue was walked and stole second base and went tothird on single by Luke Brumfield. Jeff DeBlieux ripped a longsacrifice fly to deep center to score Hue for the fourth and finalrun.

“Ryan Kennedy (2-2) kept us in it,” said Case. “Ryan didn’t havehis good stuff today. Drew Weaver came in and threw well. He hadhis best outing of the year. Those were big hits by Caleb andKendall.”

Kennedy (2K, 1BB), freshman southpaw, worked for five innings andthe win. Weaver (1K, 1BB) finished the final 2 innings.

Freddie Cabrera (1K, 2BB) went the distance for the loss.

Adding a single for the Wolves were Bud Britt and Fink.

Singling for the Warriors were George Oquendo, Raymond Fuentes,Zach LaBuwi, Tyler O’Daniel, Ray Devalle, Daniel Peters and SpencerAmmons.

The Wolves trailed the Warriors 5-4 going into the bottom of theseventh inning. Chris Fink led off with a single. DeBlieux doubledto right field. McMinn was walked intentionally to load the bases.Britt’s hard single up the middle scored the two runs.

“The guys did a good job offensively,” added Case. ‘I am proud ofour guys. These were good wins.”

DeBlieux homered and doubled for the Wolves. Lake Brumfield singledtwice. Britt added a single. Edmund Cheatham had an RBIsingle.

On the mound, Mitch Tidwell (2-2) collected the win, working thefinal 1.3 innings with no strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 hit allowed.Starter Marshun Hall worked 2.1 innings with 2 runs allowed on 2hits, 5 walks and 1 strikeout.

Co-Lin’s Daniel Jenkins worked the next 2.1 innings with 2 runsallowed on 2 hits, 2 walks and no strikeouts. Andy Lee followedwith for 1 innings with 1 run allowed on 2 hits, 1 walk and 1strikeout.

For Rend Lake, Daniel Peters led the way with 3 singles.

Absorbing the loss was A.J. Martin in relief of starter PatrickFlannigan. Martin went the final inning with 2 earned runs allowedon 3 hits and 1 walk. Flannigan allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks,6 strikeouts and 1 hit batter.
