Bond total set in Friday shooting

A Brookhaven man accused of murder in the shooting death of hisgirlfriend’s father is now facing $500,000 cash bond, LincolnCounty Sheriff’s Department officials said.
Drew Hammond, 21, of 677 Virginia Ave., was arrested and chargedwith murder Friday night after an altercation with William E.”Bubba” Thompson, 45, of 2131 Harbor Lane, Bogue Chitto, allegedlyled to Thompson’s death by gunshot wound.
Sheriff Steve Rushing said the shooting took place around 10 p.m.Friday, and when responders arrived, they found Bubba Thompson witha gunshot wound. Hammond had closed himself in a back bedroom untildeputies arrived on scene, at which point he was arrested withoutincident.
Hammond’s bond was set Monday. Since he was given a cash bond, hehas to come up with the full $500,000 before he can be releasedfrom jail, officials said.
Rushing said the manner and details of the altercation remain underinvestigation, but more should be clear once the autopsy iscomplete.
“We’re just waiting on definitive autopsy results,” Rushing said.”That’ll help us put some of the facts we have together more. It’llhelp us get a better view of what went on.”
Hammond faces his initial hearing Tuesday, though Rushing saidthat’s just part of the formalities. A trial date will be setpending autopsy, crime lab results and the outcome of the nextavailable grand jury, Rushing said.
