Brookhaven Academy captures tournament

JACKSON — Brookhaven Academy put away Hillcrest ChristianSchool 5-0 in a battle of Cougar teams Tuesday night in thechampionship finals of the Spring Break Baseball Classic atSmith-Wills Stadium.

In the semifinals, BA defeated Canton Academy to face Hillcrest,who stopped Copiah 8-7 in the other semifinals game. BA’s Cougarsimprove to 7-4 on the season.

Brookhaven sophomore Christian “Bubba” Keene was named thetournament’s Most Valuable Player. Hunter Franklin and Keene werenamed to the all-tournament team.

BA 5, Hillcrest Christian 0

Getting the win was pitcher Tyler Parvin (2-3) with 4 strikeouts, 1walk and 4 hits allowed. Thomas Woodruff (1-1) took the loss in 1.2innings with 1 strikeout, 2 walks and 2 hits allowed.

Keene tripled, doubled and singled to lead BA’s 10-hit barrage.Brent Henderson tripled twice. Donovan Lorraine ripped a double.Hitting safely were Will Gatlin, Tripp Jolly and Franklin.

Caleb Baucum doubled for Hillcrest Christian.

BA 8, Canton 5

Jolly powered BA with a home run and a triple against Canton’sPanthers. Henderson doubled twice. Tripling and singling wasGatlin. Franklin singled 3 times. Parvin and Lorraine collected 2singles apiece.

Pitching the win was Jolly (2-1) in 3 innings with 1 strikeout, 3walks and 4 hits allowed. Working the remainder was HunterMcCullough with 3 walks and 5 hits allowed.

The loser on the mound was Jeffrey Davis with 2 strikeouts, 2 walksand 5 hits allowed. Also seeing action were Kylie Warren andBradley Wilcher.

BA travels to Centreville Academy Friday for two games, beginningat 4:30 with the junior varsity followed at 6:30 by thevarsity.

For the tournament, Henderson was 7-for-17 with 3 doubles and 2triples. Keene was 8-for-16 with 2 homers, a triple and a doublefor 8 RBIs. Gatlin was 7-for-12 with a home run and triple for 4RBIs. Jolly was 7-for-13 with a homer and a pair of doubles.Franklin was 6-for-11 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs.
