Lady Hornets rally past Wesson

WESSON – “It was a nightmare,” said Wesson first year fastpitchsoftball coach Jackie Johnson Friday night after her Lady Cobrasdropped a 7-2 Region 6-2 contest to the defending Class 2A statechamp Loyd Star Hornets. Wesson led Loyd Star 2-0 with two outs inthe top of the seventh inning when things went downhill quickly forthe Cobras.

Loyd Star’s Alaina Locke walked with 2 out. Emily Smith singled asboth girls advanced a base. Winning pitcher Brooke Delaughter andCarrie Moak ripped back-to-back bloopers to right field that wereboth dropped, allowing 2 runs to score and the Hornets tied thegame at 2-all.

Three more Wesson errors allowed five more Loyd Star runs for the7-2 lead and eventual victory.

With the win, Loyd Star improved to 9-5 and 2-0 in region play.Wesson falls to 9-5 and 2-1 in region play.

Monday night, Loyd Star visits Puckett and Wesson visitsEnterprise. Both are region games and begin at 5 p.m., with thejunior varsity followed by the varsity.

“Wesson just outplayed us,” said Loyd Star girls coach JanDelaughter. “We had one inning to decide if we were going to hitthe ball.”

Brooke Delaughter (9-5) collected the win with 9 strikeouts, 1 walkand 4 hits allowed. Makenzie Rials (5-3) recorded 5 strikeouts, 2walks and allowed 4 hits.

“The girls played hard,” added Johnson. “We played 20 outs and youhave to play 21 outs to win.”

Wesson senior Christina Fink doubled and singled and scored bothruns for the Cobras. Abby Smith doubled and Summer Rialssingled.

“Jackie is doing a great job with them,” added CoachDelaughter.

Adding support to the Loyd Star win with a double was Moak. LeahBritt and Karah Smith added a single.

Junior varsity action

Loyd Star clipped Wesson 4-2 in the JV game.
