A Sunset Road mobile home was destroyed by a midday fireWednesday in spite of a capable response from several Lincoln andCopiah County fire departments during a chaotic lunchtime,officials said.

Officials said the home at 2377 Sunset Road was a total loss,and at this point the cause is undetermined.

“The homeowner said his wife turned on the air conditioner andleft, but that that’s the only thing they had done different,” saidWesson Fire Chief Dustin Brewer.

Brewer said there may have been a puppy trapped in the home, butthat firefighters had not immediately found the pet.

Lincoln County Fire Coordinator Clifford Galey said the call toSunset Road came while several calls had county firefightersscrambling at once.

A call for a trailer fire that ended up being easily containedon Nola Road close to the Lawrence County line had responders fromHeuck’s Retreat, Hog Chain and Loyd Star volunteer fire departmentspulled to the far east corner of the county at 12:41 p.m.

It was just after backup units were canceled to the Nola firewhen the call came out for a fire on Sunset Road, which runs byLake Lincoln State Park, at 1:07 p.m.

With Heuck’s Retreat as the primary response on the first call,Hog Chain was sent to Sunset Road, with Wesson and Stronghopecoming from Copiah County as well.

“It’s a long way from the Lawrence County line over to here onSunset,” Galey said. “But the response went well and everythingwent like it was supposed to. Heuck’s was on another fire way outthe other end of Nola Road, so dispatch paged Hog Chain and gotWesson en route, so that was good.”

Responders worked on the fire for several hours, but justbecause Copiah County units were on the scene in Lincoln County didnot mean that the excitement was any less in their home county.During the same time as the responses in Lincoln County, respondersin Copiah County were also handling two different wrecks on Highway51.

Copiah County Civil Defense Director Randle Drane said the firstwreck, just north of Hazlehurst on Highway 51, came just afternoon. There were no injuries in that accident, but a second oneabout an hour and a half later saw one woman transported to theUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center.

Drane said the second wreck occurred on 51 just north ofMartinsville. The name of the patient in the one-vehicle accidenthas not yet been released.

During the activity at the second fire, Heuck’s Retreat firstresponders were also sent to a medical call not far from the scenewhere a family member complained of shortness of breath.

Officials pointed to the fact that the departments were so ableto work together and cover each other where stretched thin is atestament to interdepartmental cooperation.

“With the cooperation between the counties, working together wecan accomplish a lot more,” Drane said. “My opinion is that you canhave a county or city line, that’s fine, but when you get a call tohelp, you go.”
