Ole Brook wins four matches in district 5A

Allison Boyd and Meredith Jacobs of Brookhaven prevailed in agrueling split-set marathon Wednesday and defeated West Jones inthe championship finals of No. 2 girls doubles. Boyd-Jacobs posteda 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 decision against Sara Beth Stevens and Karly McCoyin the Region 6-5A District Tennis Tournament on the Brookhillcourts.

Ole Brook also won No. 1 girls doubles as Amanda Moak and AmandaLowery defeated the West Jones team of Sara Kiparivoska and EmilyTolbert 6-0, 7-6 in the finals. Overall, BHS won four doublestitles.

BHS coach Terri Hall said she was proud of her team’s performancein the district tournament. “I was real pleased with our kids. It’senjoyable to watch them play and practice.”

Hall said No. 2 girls doubles was an epic struggle.

“It was fun to watch them go three full sets,” said Hall. “Meredithand Allison played well. It was a beautiful day.”

Hall’s Panthers also won two boys doubles matches. In No. 1 boysdoubles, Austin Watts and Jake Baker beat Forest Hill 6-1, 6-0 inthe finals. In No. 2 boys doubles, Braxton Hinton and John Calcotedefeated Forest Hill 7-6, 6-0.

The winner in each category advances to the 5A state tournament May10-11, at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. State playoff action in teamtennis begins this afternoon, with Brookhaven hosting Long Beach atthe Brookhaven Country Club, starting at 3:30. Region runner-upWest Jones is at St. Martin.

Hall’s Panthers were state runners-up to Oxford in last year’sClass 4A team playoffs.

In mixed doubles yesterday, the West Jones duo of Rachel Jefcoatand Mason Seidenburg defeated Brookhaven’s Madison Currie andBrooks Foster 6-3, 6-0 in the finals.

West Jones, coached by Kelly Ray, also won girls (Stephanie Smith)and boys (Matthew Martin) singles titles, beating McComb and ForestHill respectively.
