WESSON — The Hinds Eagles swung the bats well Sunday afternoonagainst the Co-Lin Wolves at Sullivan Field in a South Divisionbaseball doubleheader.

Hinds collected 11 hits, including a 2-RBI home run from catcherZach Polzin, on its way to an 11-5 win over Co-Lin in theopener.

In the second contest, the Eagles outslugged the Wolves 16-4 for a17-2 win in 5 innings, highlighted by 5 home runs including a 3-RBIhomer and solo homer by Polzin.

With the losses, Co-Lin falls to 3-17 in the South and 15-29overall. Hinds, coached by Sam Temple, improved to 24-16 on theseason and 14-6 in division play.

Co-Lin travels to East Central Tuesday for a doubleheader,beginning at 2 p.m.

“Hinds had hit 16 home runs on the year, nine against us,” saidCo-Lin head coach Keith Case following the twin bill. “We didn’tpitch well in the first game. We didn’t defend well in the secondgame.”

The Eagles collected 6 home runs in the twinbill.

Hinds 11, Co-Lin 5

Polzin’s 2-run homer in the second inning put the Eagles 2-0. Hindsadded 3 in the fourth, 1 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth and 3 in theseventh for the 11-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Wolves collected their 5 runs.Pinch hitter Connor Oakes ripped a 2-BRI single to lead the hittingspree. Kendall Logan, Matthew Freeman, Cable McMinn and ZachWilliams singled.

For Hinds, Manny Estrada had a 2-RBI double and a single. JustinBrodnax doubled and singled twice. Taylor Bates singled twice.Morris Grant and Polzin also singled.

On the mound, sophomore Ryan Nance (5-3) posted the win, working 5innings with 5 strikeouts, 1 walk and 3 hits allowed. Also seeingaction for an inning were Stephen Byrd and Hunter Thompson.

Absorbing the loss was sophomore left hander Jeff DeBlieux (3-6).DeBlieux worked the first 5 innings with 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and9 hits allowed. Working the sixth inning were Daniel Jenkins, Oakesand Freeman.

Hinds 17, Co-Lin 2

A 2-RBI single from Hinds shortstop Nick Schneeberger put theEagles up 2-0 in the first inning. Polzin followed a solo home topush the lead to 3-0.

In the second inning, Hinds left fielder Morris Grant ripped a solohomer to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. Three batters later, Polzinsmashed a 3-run homer over left field to push Hinds lead to7-0.

At the end of the fourth inning, the Eagles commanded a 13-0 leadover the Wolves. The final Eagle home run came in the fifth inningwhen second baseman Tyler Bates launched a 3-RBI homer that gaveHinds a 17-0 lead over Co-Lin.

With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Edmund Cheatam singled andLuke Brumfield was walked. Oaks drilled a hard double up the middleto score Cheatham and Brumfield the final out was made.

Oakes also singled for the Wolves. Tyler Hue singled.

The winning hurler was sophomore right-hander Brent Gay (5-3). Gaystruck out 4, walked 1 and allowed 2 hits. Reliever Conner Buttsworked the final inning with 1 walk and 2 hits allowed.

Taking the loss was freshman left-hander Ryan Kennedy (2-4) in 12innings with 1 strikeout, 2 walks and 8 hits allowed. FollowingKennedy were Mitch Tidwell, Taylor Ort, Ben McDowell (4th) and DrewWeaver (5th).

“Hinds’ starters are a high caliber,” said Case. “I am anxious tosee how we play the game down the stretch. We didn’t compete today,some did, but not as a team.”
