Local artists’ work in show during May

The visions and compositions of Southwest Mississippi’s aspiringartists will be on display for the public to see throughout themonth of May in the biggest gathering of local art inBrookhaven.

The second annual Lincoln County Art Show officially beginsSaturday, when around 70 artists are expected to bring close to 200works of art to the Lincoln County Public Library to be organized,judged and displayed for the next four weeks. Cash prizes will beawarded to the top three finishers in each of five categories, andan overall winner will be determined.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the diversity of talent in ourarea,” said Kay Calcote, a member of the Brookhaven Arts Council’sFine Arts Committee. “We have so much talent here in our area, andwe like to recognize and reward it.”

Any local artists who wish to enter pieces into the competitionneed to pick up a registration form at either We Frame It at 929West Chickasaw St., or from Interior Attitudes at 120 EastMonticello St. Last-minute artists may also bring their works tothe check-in at the library Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. andregister on site.

Artwork may be entered into five categories – oil and acrylic,water colors, drawing and pastel, mixed media and three-dimensionaland photography. Entries are $7 each or $20 for three pieces.Entries must not exceed 48 inches in any direction and weigh nomore than 20 pounds. Artists may sell their works at theshow.

The artwork will be judged by Dr. Stephanie Busbea, a member of thegraduate art faculty at Mississippi College and a consultant to theMississippi Museum of Art.

The art show’s public reception will be held on Saturday, May 8,from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the library. Show winners will beannounced at the reception.
