Co-Lin falls to Gulf Coast in tourney

CLINTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s BaylieghBabin scattered 3 innings over 7 innings in the opening round ofthe 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region 23Tournament. Her performance aided the Lady Bulldogs to a 2-0 shutout of the Co-Lin Lady Wolves in Clinton’s Traceway Park.
Co-Lin falls to the loser’s bracket of the double-eliminationtournament. The Lady Wolves face the loser of LSU-Eunice today at10 a.m. In other first round action, LSU-Eunice defeated Itawamba9-2, but falls to East Central 4-3. Gulf Coast defeated Pearl River4-1.
Pearl River (the MACJC champion) and East Central (the MACJCrunner-up) received opening-round byes. The Region 23 winner andrunner-up advance to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament inNormal, IL, May 20-22.

Babin, a freshman from Long Beach, also had one walk and 3strikeouts for the 34-13 Lady Bulldogs.
Gulf Coast, under the direction of Kenneth Long, took a 1-0 lead inthe fourth on Megan Colvin’s solo homer. Long’s team extended theiradvantage to 2-0 in the fifth. Kayla Tompkins reached second on aCo-Lin error. Kayla Moran’s sacrifice bunt moved Tompkins to third.With 2 outs, Courtney Fairley’s base hit scored Tompkins.
The Lady Wolves (29-17) were limited to singles by Danielle Wilson,Holli Smith and Debra Hamor. Co-Lin, coached by Allen Kent, left 6runners on base.
“We did not hit the ball today,” said Coach Kent following thegame. “Bethany (Pinkston) pitched a great game today, but we didnot have any offensive support.”
Pinkston, a freshman from Brusly, LA, went 6 innings, allowing 2runs (1 earned) on 4 hits in the loss. She issued no walks andfanned 4 Gulf Coast batters.
