Services for Jesse Buie, of Brookhaven, are noon Monday, May 17,at Bethel AME Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. R.E. TylerFuneral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Sunday from noon until 6 p.m. with family presentfrom 5 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Buie, 83, died May 13, 2010, at his residence. He was born inBrookhaven on May 6, 1927, to Jeff Buie and Irene Buie.

He was a graduate of Alexander High School and Benedict College inColumbia, S.C., with further study at the University of Chicago. Hereceived his master’s degree in administration and education andadditional hours toward an AAA certification. He was a classroomteacher, football coach, principal of Alexander High School for 19years, and assistant superintendent of Clarksdale Separate Districtfor five years.

Mr. Buie was also a consultant for St. Regis Paper Company inMonticello. He served two years in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper.His unit of the 82nd Airborne Division of the 55th was the firstAfrican-American unit to integrate into the regular army duringWorld War II. He was a member of Bethel AME Church, where he servedas head steward.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts, Sons of Allen, Lincoln ForestryAssociation, Brookhaven School District School Board, Alpha PhiAlpha Fraternity Inc., Retired Teachers Association and AARP. Hewas also a NAACP member and officer.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers; and twosisters.

Survivors are his wife, Leatrice Collins Buie, of Brookhaven; hissons, Jesse “Al” Buie, of Jackson, Larry Buie, of Chattanooga,Tenn., and Frederick Buie, of Des Moines, Iowa; his daughters,Wilda Buie Holloway, of Jackson, and Vallerie Buie McArthur-Donaldand Sylvia Buie, both of East Lansing, Mich.; his sister, BerniceBuie Brown, of Vallejo, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and twogreat-grandchildren.
