Dickerson signs with Rockies

Brookhaven Academy product Corey Dickerson wasted little timemaking a decision, signing with the Colorado Rockies Wednesdaynight after being drafted by them Tuesday afternoon in the 8thRound of the 2010 MLB Draft.

Dickerson’s signing with the Rockies means he will bypass abaseball scholarship to Mississippi State. Dickerson was theBulldogs’ top baseball signee and recruit in their 2010Class.

Dickerson and the Rockies agreed to a lucrative signing bonus. Hewill report to Colorado’s Advanced Rookie level system in Casper,Wy. on Saturday.

“I’m excited and ready to get started,” said Dickerson. “I’vealways wanted to be a pro ball player. I’m ready.”

Dickerson was The DAILY LEADER’s Most Valuable Offensive Player onthe 2008 All-Lincoln County Baseball Team. He also excelled inbasketball for the BA Cougars.

The Rockies re-drafted Dickerson after drafting him in the 29thround in 2009. Colorado had him high on their board as a Top 10round pick this year, drafting him in the 8th round Tuesday.

“I’m happy that all sides could come to a deal,” said James O.Covington, a representative of Bus Cook Sports who has been workingas Dickerson’s adviser. “This is great day. The Rockies gotthemselves a future superstar.”

Rockies scout Damon Iannelli visited Dickerson and his parentsWednesday before each side came to an agreement. He signed at 7:35that evening.

“It’s awesome,” added Dickerson about signing a pro contract. “Nowit’s time to go play.”

Wednesday was also a busy day for area prospects. Copiah Academy’sHunter Renfroe was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 31st roundof the MLB draft. Co-Lin outfielder Kendall Logan was picked by theAtlanta Braves in the 46th round.

Both Logan and Renfroe have options, and could return to collegenext season and improve their draft position just like Dickersondid this year.
