Swindle leaves Southwest for post with Oak Grove

SUMMIT — Southwest Mississippi Community College president Dr.Oliver Young announced Wednesday that women’s basketball coach MarkSwindle has resigned to accept a position at Oak Grove High Schoolin Hattiesburg. A search is underway for his replacement.

Swindle, 47, fielded competitive teams at Southwest for 10 yearsand the Lady Bears often contended for the South Division title.His wife also will teach at Oak Grove, a Class 6A school.

Gwyn Young, Co-Lin athletic director and women’s basketball coach,said Swindle had forged a strong program at Southwest. “Mark hasdone a good job at Southwest. He had some good players and we havehad some great games between us.”

In last season’s NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, Co-Lin beat Southwest74-66 in the opening round at Mississippi College in Clinton,eliminating the Lady Bears and ending their season. Co-Lin wentonto win the regional and advance to the NJCAA National Tournamentwhere the Lady Wolves finished seventh, posting a 31-2record.

Swindle’s son, Steven, passed for over 1,900 yards last season as asophomore quarterback at Parklane Academy. He will play for OakGrove this fall.
