Copiah Colonels win season opener

RAYVILLE, LA – The Copiah Academy Colonels were victorious overthe Riverfield Academy Raiders 20-0 in their season opener Fridaynight.

“We made a lot of first-game mistakes,” said Copiah Academy headcoach Scotty Cline. “We are a young team. Hopefully this game willboost their confidence after beating a very good team.”

The Colonels scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, which sawKelton Smith on a 17-yard run and Devin Harper 1-yard plunge.Copiah went for two 2-point conversion attempts but was onlysuccessful on one, a Harper run.

The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter. Peyton Whiteheadrambled on a 24-yard run.

Harper led the Colonels offensively with 109-yards rushing on 17carries. He was 3 of 6 for 40-yards in passing. Smith alsocontributed 72-yards rushing on 10 carries. Adam Pitts caught apass for 15-yards in receiving.

Defensively, Colton Brown was Copiah’s leader with 9 tackles and 3sacks. Harper intercepted a pass and Drew Granger recovered afumble.

The Colonels visit Brookhaven Academy Friday night. Kickoff is 7p.m. on R.M. (Red) Stuard Field.
