Apartments damaged in blaze

Bystanders said four apartments were damaged in an early-morningblaze at the CedarHaven Apartments that officials said will beprobed by the State Fire Marshal’s office.

“It’s under investigation, that’s all we can say right now,”said Brookhaven Fire Chief Tony Weeks.

Bryan Little lives in the apartments, which are at the corner ofCourt Street and North Church Street. He said his unit is on theother end of the strip from the ones that caught fire, but thatresidents still evacuated their apartments until the fire was undercontrol.

“My brother called and said the apartment was on fire,” he said.”I assume he called the fire trucks.”

Firefighters said the call came in at 4:52 a.m., and when theyarrived the fire appeared to be in Apartment Two. It spread to theapartment to the west, Apartment One, as well as to the twoupstairs, Apartments Seven and Eight, bystanders said.

Little said three of the four damaged apartments, including theone where the blaze started, are unoccupied. The one directly abovethe apartment that appears to be the origin is the only one thathas an inhabitant, and he was not at home.

“He drives trucks,” Little said. “He’s not home much.”

Residents of the apartments said there was another fire recentlythat started in Apartment Eight, about two months ago.

Weeks said the State Fire Marshal will be looking into the fire.Officials said he is expected on scene sometime Wednesday.
