BA Cougars welcome Riverfield

The undefeated Brookhaven Academy Cougars will host theRiverfield Raiders from Rayville, La., Friday night in anon-district Mississippi Association of Independent Schools action.The game will kick off at 7 p.m. on “Red” Stuard Field.

In other area academy football action, Copiah Academy and ParklaneAcademy will have an open date to nurse injuries and makeadjustments for their young teams.

The Pioneers (1-1) defeated Centreville Academy 16-0 lastweek.

The Cougars, coached by Herbert Davis, are coming off a lopsided53-26 victory over the Copiah Academy Colonels. BA is 2-0 on theseason.

“Riverfield is a physical team with some tough country boys thatwill get after you,” added Davis. “The Raiders will run a varietyof offensive schemes at you; like the wing-T and I-formation. Theyalso like to run the 3-3 on defense.

“We must challenge ourselves to do better and not be satisfied withlast year’s accomplishments,” continued Davis. “We still have roomfor improvement and understanding the little things that have to bedone.”

In the win over Copiah, Cougar senior quarterback Chandler Rogerscompleted 16 of 20 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns. On theground, he picked up 82 yards on 8 carries with two morescores.

Jennings Mills was able to pick up 51 yards on 6 carries with twotouchdowns. Christian “Bubba” Keene led all receivers with 7receptions for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns. He finished with 178all-purpose yards and three scores, returning a kickoff for aTD.

Defensively, senior defensive back Mark Rushing directed theCougars with 18 tackles. Alan Michael Allred followed with 10stops.

Last season, BA posted a 37-8 victory over Riverfield.

Copiah (1-1), coached by Scotty Cline, is looking to regroup thisweek in preparation for the Pisgah Dragons.

In the loss to BA, Colonel junior running back Kelton Smith poweredthe offense, rushing 17 times for 98 yards. Devin Harper followedwith 87 yards on 15 carries.

Parklane (1-1), coached by Bo Milton, will have the week off toprepare for Starkville Academy.

In the win over Centreville, Pioneer senior quarterback BrandonAustin led the offense, rushing for 165 yards on 19 carries and atouchdown. Defensively, senior lineman Hunter Ray led all tacklerswith 12 stops.
