Freshman running back Joe Walls rushed for 150 yards and scoredthree touchdowns as Mt. Hermon, La. wrecked the West Lincoln Bears30-6 Friday night on Perry Miller Field for homecoming. TheLouisiana-based Yellow Jackets swarmed 285 total yards onoffense.

“Glad to get the win,” said Mt. Hermon head coach Gwynn Holmes. “Wefinally managed to put it together and was able to cut out ourmistakes.”

The Jackets (1-2) came in hungry for their first-ever victory inhigh school football since starting their program three yearsago.

The Bears, in their 12th year of varsity football, are stillhunting their first homecoming victory.

Walls was the first to break up a scoreless tie in the firstquarter, scoring on a 5-yard run with 2:55 remaining. Mt. Hermondecided to go for the 2-point conversion and connected whenquarterback Kyle Jarrell pass to wide receiver Shane Jarrell.

“Our running back (Joe Walls) did a great job running the ball forus,” added Holmes. He formerly coached at Salem as anassistant.

The Bears (0-4) answered back in the beginning of the secondquarter. Sophomore running back Deon Moore sprinted 67-yards forthe touchdown with 11:29 remaining. West Lincoln went for the2-point conversion on a rush attempt but failed to get in.

The Jackets’ defense stepped up their game after that touchdown anddid not allow the Bears to score the rest of the night.

The offense of Mt. Hermon managed to score again in the secondquarter. When Kyle Jarrell passed to Jalen Briggs for a 12-yardtouchdown strike. The Jackets went for 2-points again and weresuccessful when Kyle Jarrell hooked up with Shane Jarrell. TheLouisiana-based Jackets led 16-6 over the Bears at halftime.

In the second half, both teams played hard in a tough, physicalbattle.

Walls scored two touchdowns in the third quarter as he sprinted34-yards to paydirt with 4:11 remaining. Then he recovered a fumbleand ran it back 28-yards to the end zone.

“Mt. Hermon was ready to play and we were not,” said West Lincolnhead coach Chris Calcote. “We have got to get ready to play onFridays. My hat is off to the Jackets on winning their firstgame.”

Offensively, the Bears offense collected 210 total yards. Moore ledthe ground game, rushing for 132-yards on 17 carries. Jonah Kingmanaged to gain 43-yards rushing on 7 carries and connected on 3passes in 10 attempts for 18-yards and one interception. Ondefense, Tyler Malone recovered a fumble.
