Wesson clinches district

BASSFIELD – The Wesson Lady Cobras rallied in the seventh inningand scored seven runs to beat Bassfield 11-8 and capture theDistrict title in 2A slowpitch softball Monday night.

The Cobras (8-9, 4-0) resume action Thursday, hosting the PuckettLady Wolves for the last regular season game before entering theplayoffs next week. The game is set to begin with junior varsity at5 p.m. followed by varsity at 6.

“It was a big win for us,” said Wesson coach Jackie Johnson. “Wewere down 8-4.”

Johnson’s team will host the first round of the 2A playoffsTuesday, It will be a best-of-three series.

Wesson 11, Bassfield 8

Jessica Delaney (5K, 3BB) pitched the win for the Cobras.

Mak Rials led Wesson’s offensive attack with two home runs. Delaneycontinued to fuel the attack with a homer and a single. ChristianWoods provided two singles. Hitting safely were Macie McQuage,Summer Rials, Shauntay Walker, Hanna Brown, Abbey Smith, Kara Darbyand Ashton Newman.

In JV action, The Lady Cobras edged the Bassfield Lady YellowJackets 8-7.

Heather Tipps was the leading batter for Wesson with a homerun anda single. Kara Darby provided two singles. Sarah Beth Miller,Olivia Allen, Hailey Chassion, Sarah Robinson and ClaireWhittington hit a single apiece.
