Co-Lin ambushed by Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON — Freshman running back James Gillum rushed for 156yards and one touchdown to lead the No. 11-ranked Mississippi GulfCoast Bulldogs to a 23-3 Saturday win over previously unbeatenCo-Lin in a South Division showdown. Co-Lin, Gulf Coast and PearlRiver are now in a three-way tie for first place in the SouthDivision with 4-1 records.

“Gulf Coast has a pretty good defense,” said Co-Lin head coachGlenn Davis. “We just got our butts whipped. We didn’t do anythingon offense.”

It was Co-Lin’s first loss in seven games.

Gulf Coast took a 3-0 lead with 8:53 left in the first quarter on a31-yard field goal by Will Scott. The Wolfpack, ranked No. 8 thisweek, got a strong defensive effort and held the Gulf Coast offenseon fourth down and 2 from the Co-Lin 20 with 10:43 left in thesecond quarter.

On the next possession, Co-Lin quarterback Percy Turner wasintercepted by Gulf Coast’s Will Copeland at the Co-Lin 26. TheWolfpack defense stiffened again, holding the Bulldogs at theCo-Lin 20. Scott’s 35-yard field goal attempt went wide left.

The Wolfpack recovered a fumbled punt at the Gulf Coast 29 but wasunable to move the ball. With 4:02 remaining in the second quarter,Justin Danise’s 43-yard field goal attempt fell short.

On the next possession, the Co-Lin defense rose to the occasionagain holding the Bulldog offense and forcing a punt. But aroughing-the-kicker penalty gave Gulf Coast new life with 2:18 leftin the half. The Bulldogs drove the ball 71 yards down the field.With1:13 remaining in the half, Gillum scored from 1-yard plunge,giving the Gulf Coast a 10-0 halftime lead.

Gulf Coast took the opening drive of the second half 43 yards downthe field and scored on quarterback Clayton Moore’s 1-yard run.Scott’s PAT was good and the Bulldogs took a 17-0 lead at the 12:52mark.

The Wolfpack pulled to within 17-3 with 3:55 left in the quarter ona Danise 26-yard field goal.

The Bulldogs added their final score with 1:51 left in the game asMoore hit Kennedy Helms with a 14-yard touchdown. Scott’s PAT wentwide left.

The Bulldog defense limited the Co-Lin offense to a 165 totalyards.

The Wolfpack offense could only muster 1 first down and 50 yards ofoffense in the first half. Co-Lin finished the game with 6 firstdowns.

Moore was 10-for-21 for 133 yards and 1 touchdown for theBulldogs.

Turner completed 14 of 25 passes for 113 yards and 1 interception.Fred Fuller made 3 catches for 33 yards. Montrell Conner caught 4passes for 32 yards. Conner had 13 carries for 24 yards.

Co-Lin will host East Central in its final regular season home gameThursday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
