Puckett squashes Hornets

PUCKETT – The Puckett Wolves boasted a powerful rushing game andhowled to a 48-0 Friday night victory over Loyd Star’s Hornets inRegion 6-2A action.

Puckett running back Hakeem Carr rushed for 189 yards on eightcarries and scored three touchdowns.

Puckett head coach Jaris Patrick was pleased to see his team bounceback after last week’s 21-14 upset loss to Madison St.Joseph.

“We played very well tonight compared to last week,” Patrick said.”The key part for us was not turning the ball over as much as lastweek. I was impressed with our better effort.”

The Wolves (6-2, 2-1) play at Hinds AHS next.

Puckett teammate Desmond Anderson carried for a total of 95 yards,earning one touchdown in 14 carries. Fletcher Trask had one strongcarry for a 57-yard touchdown. Allen Stevenson had one carry for 52yards. Nate Simmons had 10 carries for 49 yards and onetouchdown.

Quarterback Dearron McMiller had three carries for 33 yards and atouchdown. McMiller attempted one pass and came upincomplete.

Defensive leaders for the Wolves were Gatlin Rhodes and WarrenSmith with seven tackles apiece. Drew Cook had five tackles andMike Jones and Tarus Jackson each had 3 stops.

Loyd Star coach Randall Huffman said he was disappointed with histeam’s performance.

“We did not show up at all,” Huffman said. “Our boys didn’t putforth the effort we needed.”

The Hornets struggled moving the ball against the strong Wolfpackdefense. Marquis Sims led the Hornets with 11 carries for 38 yards.Marquis Hayes had 11 carries for 23 yards. Quarterback Korey Allenhad eight rushes for 16 yards.

Allen was 3 for 10 on the night passing with no touchdowns and twpinterceptions. Allen had 28 passing yards. Branden Canny had onereception for 4 yards. Travis Sorrels had a reception for 7 yards.Cori Crowe had one catch for 17 yards.

Loyd Star’s defense was led by linebacker Josh Butler with ninetackles and a fumble recovery. Travis Sorrels had six tackles.Marquis Sims had five tackles.

Loyd Star hosts Enterprise Friday for Homecoming. The Hornets are2-6 on the season and 1-2 in the region.
