9-0 Cobras take down St. Joseph

MADISON — The Wesson Cobras squared off against the Bruins ofSt. Joseph to in a Region 6-2A fight Friday night. Wesson playedhard on offense and defense and remained undefeated in nine gamesby beating the Bruins 32-15.

“Our defense held them off tonight,” is what Wesson head coachTommy Clopton said after the game. Wesson held St. Joseph to anegative 60 yards rushing.

Wesson senior D.J. Coleman took the opening kickoff 42 yards to theBruins’ 43-yard line. After an illegal hands to the face call onthe Bruins, the ball was spotted on the Wesson 37-yard line.Quarterback Matt Smith took the ball in from 20 yards out topaydirt for the first score of the game. The 2-point conversion wasno good and Wesson led 6-0 with 9:53 left in the quarter

Smith hooked up with D.J. Coleman for a 48- yard touchdown, the2-point conversion was no good and the Cobras led 12-0 with 2:24left in the first quarter.

Wesson got the ball back after the Bruin punt on their own 48 yardline. Senior running back Kyle Cross ran the ball in from 52 yardsout to cap off a 3- play drive with 1:59 left in the half andWesson led 18-0.

Starting the second half, the Cobra defense kept the reigns heldtight but the Bruin offense would eventually score with 38 secondsleft in the quarter. Quarterback Peyton Willoughby passed to NickBeasley for a 40-yard touchdown to close the gap on the Cobras. Theextra point was good by Blayne Jones and the score was 18-7.

The Bruins scored in the 4th quarter after a controversial passinterference call set up Charlie Beene’s 1-yard run. Willoughbythen passed to Beasley for the 2-point conversion and it was 18-15with 8:24 left in the game.

Wesson took very little time to answer as Smith hit D.J. Colemanfor 88 yards on the second play. The 2-point conversion was no goodand Wesson led 24-15.

Wesson then got an interception by Gage Wilson on the St. Joe drivethat set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Steven Jones. Smith ran theball in for the 2-point conversion and Wesson led 32-18 with 7:04left in the game.

St. Joe then took it one more time and began to drive the ball downthe field, but Willoughby’s pass was intercepted by Coleman.

Wesson was led offensively by Jones with 127 yards on 15 carries.Cross had 66 yards on 4 carries. Smith had 54 yards with 10carries.

Smith was 3 for 4 passing for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensively, Wesson was led by Paxton Cupit with 16 tackles. PaytonCupit had 12 tackles. Derrick Lyles added 9 tackles. Barron Millerand Zack Wilson each had 8 tackles.
