Opponents recognize BC’s No. 26

BOGUE CHITTO – Opposing runners, receivers and quarterbacks seea lot of jersey No. 26 when they play the Bogue Chitto Bobcats.Middle linebacker Kevin Brothern usually leads the Bobcats intackles.

Brothern accounted for 15 tackles in last Friday’s homecoming gamevictory against the Salem Wildcats. That performance has earnedBrothern The DAILY LEADER’s Defensive Player of the Weekrecognition.

Bogue Chitto coach Gareth Sartin expressed his satisfaction withBrothern’s weekly efforts on defense. “Kevin has been our leadingtackler pretty much every ballgame. He plays middle linebacker forus and does a good job slowing down the other team’s running backs.He makes big tackles for us. He likes to make big hits.”

Sartin said Brothern is strong in the weight room and uses hispower on the gridiron. “Kevin is real aggressive. He really likesto make big hits. He’s very strong in the weight room. He squats425 and benches 275.”

He was BC’s leading tackler as a sophomore in 2009 and the numberof hits continue growing this season. The Bobcats are 6-4 overalland 4-2 in the Region 4-1A race as they prepare for their finalgame of the regular season, a Friday visit to region opponentDexter.

Brothern (6-1, 225) is the 18-year-old son of Helen Fairman andKevin Brothern, Sr. He has four sisters.

Brothren said the Bobcats have improved on defense this season. “Weare better. Our linebackers and secondary are stronger.”

Also at linebacker for the Bobcats are James Blackwell and JermaineBlackwell. The defensive line includes Tevin Tobias, Lanell Bryant,Shane (Buck) Lewis and Jeremy Blackwell.

Working in BC’s secondary are Tyler Saucier, Michael Martin, FrankThigpen and Jeremy Martin.

The Bobcats need a win over Dexter to assure themselves of a berthin the state playoffs. “We just have to play them hard,” saidBrothern.

Middle linebacker suits Brothern just fine. “I like being able tocontrol the middle of the line and hit anything that comes my way,”said Brothern. “I just try to do my best each game.”

He said he enjoys playing for Coach Sartin. “I like playing forhim. He’s a good coach.”

Assistant coach Chad Norton coordinates the defense. Brothern said,”Coach Norton works us hard on defense. He gets us ready to playeach week.”

His favorite NFL player is Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis. He hopesto play college football after his senior year.

In his spare time, Brothern said he enjoys hunting and fishing. TheBobcats are hunting for a victory over Dexter this week.
