Co-Lin Lady Wolves hold off the Lady Indians

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves remain undefeated in three gamesas they won their home opener 66-59 over the Itawamba Lady Indiansin Graydon L. Mullen Gymnasium Thursday night.

In the men’s game, Itawamba snuck out with a slim 69-66 victoryover Co-Lin.

The Wolfpack fans got to witness two special events during thenight. One occurred after the women’s game when they honored CoachGwyn Young and named the court in his honor.

The second event occurred during the halftime of the men’s gamewhen the Co-Lin football team was announced for their greatseason.

Co-Lin resumes action Monday, hosting Mississippi Delta Trojans.Game time is set to begin with the ladies at 6 p.m., followed bythe men’s game at 8. The Wolves were originally scheduled to travelto Moorhead on Monday to face the Trojans, but the game was swappeddue to Mississippi Delta’s basketball court was not ready.

Co-Lin 66, Itawamba 59

The Lady Wolves (3-0) defended their home court as three playersscored in double figures. Kiara Etienne led the charge with 22points and 3 rebounds. Brandi Simmons provided 13 points and 3rebounds. JaQuandria Williams contributed 11 points and 6rebounds.

Co-Lin set the tone early in the first half and built a big lead byhalftime. The Lady Wolves led 42-25 over the Lady Indians.

Itawamba rallied back in the second half and cut the down Co-Linlead to 5 points with their full court trap. The Lady Wolves wereable to make their free throws and key baskets down the stretch tohold off the Indians to get the win.

“We did not respond well with Itawamba pressure in the secondhalf,” said Young. “Their trap disrupted our penetration, whichcaused us to turn over the ball. Itawamba managed to get easybaskets off our mistakes.

“In the first half, we shot the ball very well and got into a goodrhythm,” continued Young. “Overall, we still have loads ofimprovement to work on.”

The Lady Indians (1-1) was led by LaPrecious Naylon and JameikaHoskins, scoring 11 points apiece.

Itawamba 69, Co-Lin 66

The Wolves (2-1) rally fell short in the final seconds of the gamewhen two 3-points shot attempts hit iron as the buzzersounded.

Marcus Hooten led Co-Lin’s attack with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 3assists. Antonio Holmes provided help with 11 points.

“We made a lot of mental mistakes at crucial times,” said Co-Lincoach, Dennis Sims. “We were down by 1 point with 30 seconds leftin the game and we turned over the ball. Neither team played welloffensively. The guys does not understand that at this stage of thegame, being at the college level, that you have to be more mentallyprepared than physically.

“We did not protect our home court,” continued Sims. “We still havenot come together as a team yet.”

The Itawamba Indians (1-1) had four players to score in doublefigures. Todd Nelson led all scorers with 15 points. WendellWilliams, Jarvis Shaw and Nick Moncure chipped in 10 pointsapiece.
