A few streets will receive some improvements, and walkingdowntown could have a new feel following discussions during thecity board meeting on Tuesday.
Mayor Les Bumgarner told the board that the overlay of North FirstStreet will begin shortly and he hopes the project is completed byMarch or April of next year.
Bumgarner said money left over from repairing Brookway Boulevardwill be used to fund the North First Street restoration.
Bumgarner informed the board that he is hoping to receive a federalgrant for $500,000 for a project related to a new business comingto town. That money, along with the city and county’s $100,000,will be used to improve the road leading to Rex Lumber Company, which expects to be in production in March.
“It’s not designed for the traffic they’re going to have on it,”said Bumgarner about current road conditions.
If money is found, downtown could also see a fewimprovements.
Bumgarner told the board that he would be making a few tripsoutside of Brookhaven for curbside inspiration and to inquire aboutsidewalk grants. The mayor thinks it might be challenging toacquire the grant needed, but he is choosing to remainoptimistic.
“I think it’s going to be an uphill battle, but I’m encouraged,”Bumgarner said. “You have to look under the right rock.”
Bumgarner also thinks a new sidewalk covering four of five blocksin the central business district could be a positive influence onthe community and the final part of beautifying downtown.
“It’s like painting your house,” said Bumgarner. “It’s thefinishing touches.
After a lengthy board meeting and updating city officials onseveral projects, Bumgarner is glad to see the city continuedmovement in a positive direction.
“Everything’s finally coming together,” said Bumgarner.
