They are fresh from directing the Lady Cats to the 2010 Class 1Astate championship. BC won the fastpitch crown last May, givingthem the milestone achievement of two state titles in oneyear.

BC’s lofty reign is envied by neighboring rivals and larger schoolsacross the Magnolia state. Scott Leggett’s slowpitch record is 167wins and 69 losses in seven seasons; a .708 winning percentage. TheLady Cats were 26-7 this season, beating Wheeler’s Lady Eagles inthe championship finals.

Winning the fastpitch title last May gave BC its first fastpitchcrown. Leggett has a 107-53 record in six seasons at thehelm.

“The girls are the ones who make it possible,” said Leggett. “Ballis ball. That’s the way we approach it. Winning fastpitch was big.Having the same group of girls coming back (for slowpitch), made usconfident.”

The Lady Cats accomplished that by defeating the North 1A championWheeler Lady Eagles in three games. They lost the first game 7-3,but fought back to win the second game 9-2 and the finale 9-7 toclaim the MSHAA slowpitch softball State 1A Championship on theV.A. Field.

Leggett, 35, is a 1993 Bogue Chitto graduate. He praised the foursenior members of his squad. They are left-centerfielder DarcyMiller, shortstop Josie Porter, second baseman Bradi Davis andcatcher Toy Smith.

” We lose four good ones,” said Leggett. “Our seniors have beenplaying for me for six years. I think all of them started as 10thgraders. Darcy, Josie and Bradi were on the ’07 championship game.Toy started in ’08.”

Leggett lauded their athletic skills. “We have some great athletesand confidence, too. The whole season wasn’t easy. We played somestrong teams. That’s something that’s unique about thisteam.”

Making the transition from a summer fastpitch league program is adifficult adjustment at the plate. The batting stance and pitchingdelivery is a sharp contrast.

“There was a stretch early in the year when we didn’t score a runin 20 innings,” said Leggett. “Defensively, we were pretty sharp. If you don’t have defense, you won’t win many games.”

Looking ahead, Leggett will have seven starters returning for theslowpitch season next fall. They are freshman Alexis Givens atfirst base, sophomore Regan Welch at third base, sophomore AdrienneWallace in left field, freshman Mattie Avants in right-center andjunior Kaylie Cosby in right field.

On the mound, sophomore Kerri McGehee started.

“We will have two seniors next year,” said Leggett. “We will bemore junior-loaded.”

When Leggett finished high school, he attended Co-Lin for twoyears. He switched to LSU and considered pursuing a degree inarchitecture. Then he went to Southern Miss and entered sportsmedicine.

“I thought about becoming an athletic trainer,” said Leggett. “Heminored in history and that opened the doors to the educationalfield. He taught one year at Brookhaven Academy and then went toBogue Chitto. First year to teach was 1999-2000. He worked with RonRushing at BA in football and baseball.

Leggett coached at Enterprise, from 2000-04. He helped Ricky Deerewith football and coached baseball.

“She does a lot for our program,” said Scott. “On and off thefield, she’s a valuable asset.”

They have two children: Alyssa, age 5; and Knox, 3.

“It helps to play larger schools,” said Leggett. “We playBrookhaven, McComb, North Pike and Lawrence County. We respect themand they respect us.

Everybody knows about the Bogue Chitto girls. They are successfulin softball and basketball.”

Leggett praised the people surrounding his program. “We have agreat parental and community support,” said Leggett. “Everybody isbehind us. Our administration supports us.”
