Wesson kickers in split with Loyd Star Hornets

The Wesson Cobras and the Loyd Star Hornets battled in districtsoccer action Friday night at Brookhaven’s Hansel King Sportsplex.The Cobras defeated The Hornets 4-0 while the Lady Cobras lost 4-3to the Lady Hornets. In the boys junior varsity game, the Hornetsdefeated the Cobras 2-0.

Wesson 4, Loyd Star 0

The varsity boys game was a grueling contest with both teamsplaying an extremely physical and aggressive contest. The Cobrasquickly gained the lead against the Hornets. scoring two goalswithin minutes of each other. The first goal for the Cobras wasfrom Tony DelCid and another goal was scored by BrandonNettles.

The third goal for Wesson was from Emilio Collado who took adirect penalty against the Hornets and scored from outside the box.The Cobras were able to maintain their 3-0 lead throughout thefirst half. Earning assists for the Cobras in the first half wereCollado and DelCid

During the second half, the intense battle continued between thearchrivals. The Cobras and the Hornets had difficulty positioningthemselves to score until DelCid finally made the final goal of thegame. Wesson’s goalie, Jacob Tarver, earned his second shutout withthe 4-0 victory. Wesson’s record improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 indistrict.

After the game, Wesson’ Coach Gunter commented on his firstdistrict win, “Our guys played tough against a very strong team. Iwas glad to see all of their hard work pay off.”

Loyd Star 4, Wesson 3

The varsity girls game was also a difficult battle as the gameremained tied throughout much of the first half. Loyd Star was thefirst to score with a goal from Robin Britt. Wesson’s JordanNettles earned the first goal for the Lady Cobras after an assistfrom Kayly Peyson. Minutes before the end of the first half,Miranda Britt scored and gave the Lady Cobras a 2-1 lead athalftime.

Both teams came out strong during the second half with thedefenses working hard. The Lady Hornets were the first to score offanother well-placed shot from Robin Britt. Britt’s goal wasanswered immediately by another goal from Wesson’s Nettles whoscored one more goal within seconds of the end of regulation playto tie the game 3-3. Vanesha Harris earned two assists during thesecond half.

During overtime, the teams played two 10-minute tie breakers butneither of them was able to score, forcing a shootout contest. TheLady Cobras were unable to make any of their shots against LoydStar’s goalie, Jenna Brown, giving the Lady Hornets the 4-3victory.

Scoring for Loyd Star during the shootout were Dawn McDaniel,Miranda Britt, and Robin Britt. The Lady Cobras are 0-2 in districtplay and 1-4 overall

JV Prevails

The Hornet junior varsity team defeated the Cobras 2-0. Scoringboth goals for Loyd Star was Braden Smith.

The Cobras travel to McComb Tuesday and have a home date Fridayagainst Franklin County on the Copiah-Lincoln Community Collegesoccer field at 5:30 and 7:00 pm.
