Hoover scores pair for BHS; Wesson boys sack Panthers

WESSON — Senior midfielder Amy Hoover scored twice in thesecond half, leading the Brookhaven Lady Panthers to a 3-1 Tuesdaynight soccer victory against Wesson’s Lady Cobras. It was Hoover’sfirst action for the Lady Panthers since she under went thyroidremoval surgery before Christmas.

Andie Netherland scored the other BHS goal on a rebound off theWesson goalkeeper.

Katie Grace Culpepper worked as Brook’s goalkeeper. She made threesaves.

The Lady Panthers (5-4) led Wesson 1-0 at halftime on Netherland’sgoal. They lost their shutout when Jordan Nettles scored for theLady Cobras after rebounding her own shot attempt.

In the boys game, Wesson rolled to a 5-1 victory as Tony Del-Cidauthored a hat trick for the Cobras. Emilo Collado scored the othertwo goals.

Del-Cid scored early when he broke through the Panther’s defenseand scored off a well-executed assist from Collado. Del-Cid scoredagain with another assist from Collado at the 30-minute mark of thefirst half. Just before the end of the half, Collado scored off apenalty kick after one of his teammates was knocked down in thebox.

Although the Panthers had several good shot attempts during thefirst half, they couldn’t get anything past Wesson’s goalie JacobTarver.

“We took about seven or eight shots the first half but they went tothe goalie or past the goal,” said BHS coach Kevin Bower.

The Panthers got a second half goal from Houston Case, cuttingWesson’s lead to 3-1. They missed a penalty kick.

Del-Cid scored a third goal off a pass from Gage Ashley. Colladoscored the last goal of the evening.

Wesson’s season record improves to 6-2. Brookhaven’s record is now3-6.

Happy Uppal served as Brook’s goalie.

The Panthers resume play tonight, hosting Warren Central on KingField. The BHS junior varsity boys play at 5 p.m., followed by thevarsity girls at 6 p.m.

The Ole Brook Invitational starts at 9 a.m. Saturday on King Field.Joining BHS in the tournament field are Natchez Cathedral and NorthPike. The last game is at 2:30.

Wesson sees its next action at Franklin County in Meadville.
