BA splits with Columbia

Brookhaven Academy’s basketball teams split a pair of games inhigh school action with Columbia Academy Friday night in John R.Gray Gymnasium. Coach Barry Gray’s Lady Cougars topped the LadyCougars of Columbia 47-30 to improve to 14-2 overall and 4-0 inDistrict 4-AA play.

In varsity boys action, Columbia Academy, ranked number 2 in theAcademy AA poll, whipped Brookhaven 63-39. Columbia improved to14-5 overall and 3-0 in district play and won for the first time in15 years on Brookhaven’s home floor. Brookhaven fell to 9-6 overalland 3-1 in district play.

Columbia got a game high 15 points from Taylor Fortenberry and 14points each from Cole Oglesbee and Tanner Pace in thevictory.

“Any time you can beat Brookhaven, you know you’ve achievedsomething and to win on their floor is even bigger.” said ColumbiaAcademy head coach Reid McCay. “Coach Watts always has a good teamand there is a lot of tradition in this program. It’s a good winfor us tonight, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t reallymatter that much. Coach Watts always has his team ready to playwhen tournament time arrives and it will be no different thisyear.”

Brookhaven trailed by just 8 points at the half, but Columbia useda 35-15 outburst in the second half to pull away for the easy win.Senior forward Sidney Chaffin scored 11 points to lead Brookhaven,and Will Hickman had 9 points in support. Brennan Miller added 8points. Gage Posey pulled down 7 rebounds and Brock Smith was ableto collect 6 rebounds.

Brookhaven 47, Columbia 30

Summer Calhoun scored a team-high 10 points to lead Brookhaven.Terah Winborne, Laura Beth Wright and Mary Lindsay Magee each added9 points in support. Anna Katelyn Mangold pulled down 8 rebounds.Winborne had five steals and dished out 5 assists as BA took a26-17 halftime lead.

Hannah Martin scored a game-high 14 points to lead Columbia. AshtonScarborough was able to score 10 points in support.

Junior High Results

In junior high girls action, Columbia topped Brookhaven 36-26.Brookhaven fell to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in district play.

Lindsey Winborne scored 8 points to lead Brookhaven. Madison Warrenand Destiny Allen each scored 7 points in support. Allen pulleddown 12 rebounds.

Greta Carley scored 9 points to lead Columbia.

In the junior high boyhs game, Brookhaven beat Columbia 44-33 asRoss Foreman sacked 11 points and Zac Smith 10. Josh Wigginschipped in 8 points, Landon Nettles 7 and Travis Thornton 6.

Columbia’s P.J. Hammond led all scorers with 23 points. Kyle Smithscored 6 points and Logan Cooke 4.

In 7th grade girls action, Brookhaven topped Columbia 23-17 asWhitney Moak scored 7 points to lead Brookhaven. Michaela Riley ledColumbia with 9 points.
