BHS splits with Forest Hill

Brookhaven and Forest Hill split a Region 5-5A doubleheaderFriday night in Sinclair Gymnasium. The Lady Patriots got a pair offree throws from sophomore guard Anissa Jackson in the waningmoments for a slim 42-39 win over the Brookhaven LadyPanthers.
In the varsity boys game, Brookhaven’s Panthers overcame aseason-high 33 turnovers to turn back the Forest Hill Patriots60-56
Brookhaven continues\ Region 5-5A play at McComb Tuesday. JV actiongets under way at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and7:30.
F.Hill 42, Brookhaven 39
The Lady Panthers (5-11, 0-1) and Lady Patriots (14-4, 2-0) bothshot under 39 percent from the field. Forest Hill, coached byTangela Banks, realized a 10-all deadlock entering the secondstanza and a 20-17 lead at the intermission break.
The largest lead in the game was an 8-point Forest Hill advantage.Brookhaven cut their deficit to a single point, 40-39 on TiakaraKelly’s third trey of the game with under 10 seconds left.Jackson’s free throws came with less than 5 seconds on the clock asthe Lady Panthers’ last attempt missed its mark.
Kelly paced Brookhaven with 14 points. Shareeka Hill had 8rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Fredericka Fairman and ChristenBenson had 5 rebounds apiece. Benson also had 3 assists.
Taniesha Hobson led the Lady Patriots with 15 points, followed byLatoya Collins with 11 points. Forest Hill held a 37-30 reboundingedge.
Brook 60, Forest Hill 56
The Panthers (14-3, 1-0) continued their winning ways, but astubborn Forest Hill ballclub would not go away easily. Brookhaven,coached by Preston Wilson, used several scoring spurts to keep thelead for the entire game.
The Patriots (8-8, 1-1), under the direction of first-year headcoach Milton Ray, used a stifling half-court defensive press thatgave the Panthers fits all night long.
Forest Hill forced Brookhaven into committing a season-high 33turnovers, with 20 of the Panthers’ miscues coming in the firsthalf. Ole Brook committed 24 of those errors in the second andthird frames but mustered several double-digit scoringsprees.
The Patriots trailed 16-9 after one period, and found themselvesfacing a 35-22 deficit at halftime.
Ray’s team kept this game close in the second half; outscoring OleBrook 34-25. Their inability of hit baskets and free throws wouldprove costly.
“We wanted to try and force turnovers,” said Coach Ray. “When wegot the score close enough, we were unable to make key baskets downthe stretch.”
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor, but Brookhavenused a 48-34 rebounding edge and a 22-8 effort in second chancescoring to hold on for the win.
“Glad to get the win,” said Panther head coach Preston Wilson.”Forest Hill was able to control tempo with their half-court pressand made it difficult for us.”
Forest Hill’s William Brown led all scorers with 22 points.Quinterious Moore had 12 points and Chris Bilbo 11.
The Panthers got double-doubles from senior center Fred Fairmanwith 15 points and 10 rebounds. Keith Johnson had 10 points and 10rebounds. Leo Garrett tossed in 14 points, while Daniel Washingtonhad 11 points. Garrett and Johnson each had 3 assists and 3steals.
