FCHS kickers clip Wesson boys in OT

BUDE – In what is expected to be a career filled with memorablegoals, Franklin County seventh grade soccer sensation KyleMcCormick added his first celebration to a chapter of many to comewith a game-winning strike in overtime to give his Franklin CountyBulldogs a 3-2 victory over district rival Wesson.

The victory kept the Bulldogs’ slim playoff chances alive, and keptWesson from clinching a playoff spot as well.

In the girls’ game, Franklin junior Karlee Mullins scored a 3-goalhat trick to aid Franklin County in a 6-1 win. Mullins currentlyleads Class 3A in goals scored with 30 this season.

“Karlee had another fantastic game,” said FC soccer coach BenYarbrough. “Our team played hard as a whole, despite giving up agoal on a penalty kick early in the second half. I’m proud ofthem.”

FC’s Kristen Emory tied the game up with a goal at the 81-minutemark of the second half before watching her teammates dominate therest of the contest. Goals by Se’Driq Middleton, Krislyn Kent, andMullins helped the Lady Bulldogs prevail in their ninth straightdistrict victory dating back to December 2009.

“We are playing great soccer as a whole right now,” addedYarbrough. “Our girls are really working hard and playinggood.”

The Lady Bulldogs (13-5-1, 4-0) got added support from its supportcast of playmakers in Abbie Graves, Taylor Moak, Regan Scott, andEmily Smith. The victory marked the Lady Bulldogs sixth in a rowthis season.

Jordan Nettles scored a penalty kick for the Lady Cobras during thefirst half of the girls game.

As for Mullins, it was also a historic night for her, as she becamethe first player in 3A girls’ soccer history to have three straight30-goal seasons. Mullins already holds the school record anddistrict record for career goals and goals scored in aseason.

Wesson (6-3), coached by Franklin County native Albert Brown, a2001 FCHS graduate, watched its early 1-0 lead slip away as theLady Bulldogs’ powerful offense took over.

Bulldogs Prevail

The Bulldogs used two goals by Coleman Graves to set the tone inthe primetime boys feature, before Wesson forced overtime.McCormick took over from there, netting a swift kick for goal togive his teammates a dramatic win.

Wesson’s Emilio Collado scored off a penalty kick leaving the gametied 1-1. Tony Del-Cid, tied the game again at 2-2 when he scoredoff a pass from Walker Parrish.

Junior Varsity Results

During the boys junior varsity game, Wesson held the lead 2-0 athalftime with a goal from C.J. Viramontez and a penalty kick fromSteve Del-Cid.

Franklin County’s Johnny Moore and Kane Gillian each scored a goalduring the second half ending the game in a 2-2 tie.

Wesson plays Cathedral next Friday in Natchez in a criticaldistrict game.
