School district names new superintendent

Hattiesburg School District veteran Dr. Lisa Karmacharya hasbeen named the new superintendent of the Brookhaven SchoolDistrict.

The city school board announced the decision Tuesday after afive-month search.

“The board was unanimous in this decision,” said Carl Aycock,vice chairman of the district’s board of trustees. “We’re all veryexcited about having her lead our district.”

Karmacharya, who is currently serving as the executive directorof federal programs for the Hattiesburg district, said she hasalready spoken with her interim superintendent about her currentcontract. She mentioned that things look promising to begin her newjob as Brookhaven superintendent on March 1. “My peers, myco-workers, my superiors, everyone has been incredibly supportive,”said Karmacharya. “They are bitter-sweet.”

With roughly 17 years of experience in education, Karmacharya isexcited about donning the blue and red.

“I am really looking forward to a new challenge and being a partof the Brookhaven community,” she said.

The Brookhaven school board has combed through dozens ofapplications for its top administration job after currentsuperintendent Lea Barrett announced her retirement in August.
