Co-Lin wins over Hinds

UTICA – The No. 7-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Community College LadyWolves continued their winning ways Saturday afternoon, with an88-55 South Division win over the Hinds Lady Bulldogs in J.D. BoydGymnasium.

The Co-Lin Wolves made it a Wolfpack sweep with a come-from-behind60-51 win over the Bulldogs; making up a Jan. 10, canceled contestdue to inclement weather.

Co-Lin continues in South Division play Monday and Thursday night,hosting Pearl River and Hinds respectively in Mullen Gym. On bothnights, women’s action tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at8.

Co-Lin 88, Hinds 55

The Lady Wolves (15-1, 7-0) used a potent pressure defense thatforced Hinds into 18 turnovers; scoring 19 points. Co-Lin’sreserves outscored the Lady Bulldogs 42-20, and held a whopping55-25 rebounding edge.

“We played defensively today,” Lady Wolves head coach Gwyn Youngwhose ballclub shot 52 percent from the floor. “Our press defensecaused them (Hinds) a lot of turnovers.”

Powering the Lady Wolves with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blockedshots was sophomore forward Sedreka Plummer. Kiara Etienne andPaige Webster tossed in 12 points apiece. Kristin Newsome came offthe bench to grab a game-high 13 rebounds. Natchez native KeoshaBradley had 5 assists. Jasmine Belton had 2 steals.

Hinds (5-12, 1-6), coached by Micheyln Smith, never led in thegame, and trailed by as many as 41 points. The Lady Bulldogs wereheld to 35 percent shooting from the floor, and lost the pointsbattle in the paint 52-24 and 11-6 in second chance points.

LaShondra Dunson led Hinds with 11 points.

Co-Lin 60, Hinds 51

The Wolfpack (7-9, 3-4) battled with Hinds for the first 20 minutesas each team held a 5-point advantage at several points. Co-Lin,coached by Dennis Sims, entered the halftime locker room with a27-23 lead.

The Bulldogs (5-12, 1-6) opened the second half with a 10-1 run, totake a 33-28 with 16:16 left in the game on an offensive putback byAdam Smith.

During the following 12 minutes, neither team could pull away fromthe other. Co-Lin would come out on the good end of a 24-16 scoringspree to take the lead for good at 52-49 on a 3-point basketball byJackson native Marcus Hooten with 4:10 left in the game.

Sims’ team began to sack their free throws and limited Hinds to asingle free throw in the final 3:10 of the game.

“We got a lot out of our guards today,” Coach Sims said. “It was agood win for us. We did good holding them to 28 points in thesecond half.”

Hooten, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard from Jackson Provine, led allscorers with 32 points and 6 rebounds. Jamaal McCoy had 11 pointsand 10 rebounds. Point guard Ernest Wafer III had 7 points, 7rebounds and dished out 5 assists. The Wolfpack committed only 10turnovers, but shot a dismal 36 percent (18 of 50) from the field.They were 12 of 20 from the charity stripe, but were 15 of 18 (83percent) in the second half.

“We need to keep on winning,” Sims added. “We have a stretch ofgames at home over the next two weeks, and we need to winthem.”

For Hinds veteran head coach Ralph Moore, former Hinds AHS standoutTrevis Thomas led the Bulldogs with 19 points. He only had 6 in thesecond half.
