It’s been a nasty couple of days in Brookhaven, but a healthydose of sunshine and the Brookhaven Camellia Society’s 48th annualCamellia Show should make for a pleasant Saturday.
“Everything else will be dreary, but our place will be glowing withthe beauty of the blooms,” said society member HomerRichardson.
The yearly demonstration of the winter flower will be held at theBrookhaven Recreation Department on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Thousands of Camellia varieties fromacross the southeast and beyond will be displayed and judged incompetition, and Camellia experts will be present to answer thepublic’s questions about the plant and growing tips.
A pair of vendors selling Camellia plants will arrive Saturday at 8a.m., but supplies aren’t expected to last far beyond noon.
“This is an opportunity to see, in one place, a very largeselection of Camellia blooms,” Richardson said. “It’s unlikelyyou’ll get a chance to do this very often.”
While freezing temperatures around Lincoln County since Christmashave no doubt hurt this year’s Camellia crop, Richardson saidexquisite blooms will still arrive at this year’s show.
“Most people, if they know they’ve got real cold weather coming in,will cut them a little early and keep them protected until they getto the show,” he said.
Weather over the weekend is expected to improve. The WeatherChannel online predicts sunny weather for Saturday and Sunday, withtemperature rising into the mid 40s and 50s.
