Co-Lin takes two from Hinds

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves used a 15-3 run to start thesecond half on their way to a 87-54 South Division win over theHinds-Utica Community College Lady Bulldogs. It was the secondSaturday in a row that the two teams had to make-up a game due toweather postponements.

Co-Lin, ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA poll, improves to 17-1overall, 9-0 in the division. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 5-14, 1-8in the division.

In the men’s game, sophomore guard Marcus Hooten scored 19second-half points to rally the Co-Lin Wolves in a 73-67 SouthDivision win against the Hinds Bulldogs. It was the second Saturdayin a row that the two teams had to make-up a game due to weatherpostponements.

With the win, Co-Lin improves to 8-10 overall, 4-5 in the division.Hinds drops to 5-14 and 1-8 in the division.

Co-Lin travels to Perkinston on Monday to take on the MississippiGulf Coast Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. The women’s game starts at 6p.m.

The Wolfpack trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half.With 2:05 left in the half, Ernest Wafer scored on an old-fashioned3 point play pulling the Wolves within 2, 27-29. Hinds led 34-32 athalftime.

A bucket by Antonio Holmes gave the Wolfpack their first lead ofthe game at 42-41 with 14:28 left in the half. Co-Lin built a 49-41lead as the Bulldogs’ shooting went cold. The visitors went 6minutes without a basket.

Hinds battled back and tied the game at 63-all on a trey by TrevisThomas with 3:40 remaining. Back-to-back baskets by Hooten andHolmes gave Co-Lin a 67-63 lead with 2:48 left in the game.

The Wolves went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe in the last 2:20left in the game.

Hooten finished the game with 26 points. Antonio Holmes was theonly other Co-Lin player in double figures with 17 points. JamaalMcCoy led off the backboards with 5 rebounds.

“We executed a lot better on defense in the second half,” saidCo-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims. “The biggest factor was AntonioHolmes. It was his best game since the start of the season.”

Sophomore Erik Burks led Hinds with a game-high 29 points,including 5 treys, and 6 rebounds. Thomas added 18 points.

Co-Lin shot 63 percent from the floor in the second half andfinished the game shooting 54 percent.

The Lady Wolves took a 34-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.The Lady Bulldogs’ shooting went cold in the second half as theyonly scored 3 points in the first 7 minutes.

“We fouled too much in the first half and we were sloppy onoffense, said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “Our defense wasmuch better in the second half.”

With 7:24 left in the game, a basket by freshman Alexus Sturgisgave the Lady Wolves their largest lead of the game at 65-43.

Five Lady Wolves scored in double figures led by sophomore BrandiSimmons with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. Sedreka Plummeradded 12 points. Paige Webster came off the bench to chip in 12points. Adding 10 points apiece were Kiara Etienne and JaQuandriaWilliams. Sturgis dished out 7 assists.

Co-Lin outscored the Lady Bulldogs 44-18 in the paint and the benchoutscored Hinds 34 7.

Sophomore LaShondra Dunson scored a game-high 20 points for Hinds.Kenya Wright and Raven Hubbard chipped in 13 and 12 pointsrespectively.
