SOSO — The Brookhaven Panthers had a feeling of deja vu Tuesdaynight in the Region 6-5A Basketball Tournament. Forest Hill heldoff the Panthers 67-65 in overtime, as the Patriots took a secondstraight OT game against BHS. However, this loss ended thePanthers’ season.
In the girls game, No. 1 seed West Jones whipped Brookhaven 60-46.West Jones will meet McComb, a 55-48 winner over Forest Hillyesterday, in Friday’s title game. The No. 1-seeded McComb boyseliminated West Jones 64-51 last night and meet Forest Hill in thefinals.
The Panthers (22-6) were outscored 10-8 in overtime after battlingthe Patriots to a 57-57 deadlock at the end of regulation.
“We gave up a lot of layups early in the game,” said BHS coachPreston Wilson, referring to his team’s 21-14, first-quarterdeficit. “Number 33 (Andre Armstrong) made some big shots for them.He hit a three that put them up in overtime.”
Wilson’s team had lost a 64-62 OT game at Forest Hill Feb. 1. Theybeat the Pats 60-56 Jan. 7, at BHS.
The Panthers got 16 points from 6-foot-8 senior center FredFairman. Ross Hill tossed in 15 points before fouling out and KeithJohnson scored 13.
Lucien Sterling scored 13 points to lead 5 Patriots in doublefigures. Quinterius Porter added 12 points.
The Lady Panthers (5-21), seeded No. 4, got 13 points from ChristenBenson and 11 from Tiakara Kelly. On the backboards, they got 6rebounds from Shareeka Hill. Benson, Audora Hill and ArcheaBrothern had 5 rebounds apiece.
“West Jones is a senior team and they are well organized,” said BHScoach Freda Craft. “They have good shooters, too.”
The Lady Mustangs were directed by Kiara Speed’s 16 points. JanettaMcCullum added 13.
