The Wesson Lady Cobras were clutch shooters from charity stripeas they sacked 4 of 6 free throws in the closing seconds to prevailover the Puckett Lady Wolves 56-51 Tuesday night in the openinground of the Regional 6-2A Tournament in Loyd Star’sGymnasium.

In the other girls’ game, the Madison St. Joseph Lady Bruinseliminated the Loyd Star Lady Hornets 56-39.

In boys’ action, the Wesson Cobras came out on fire in the firstquarter to set the tone and coasted to a 63-51 win over the PuckettWolves.

In the finale, the Enterprise Yellow Jackets rallied in the fourthquarter and outscored the Loyd Star Hornets 14-4 for 54-47victory.

The Hornets and Lady Hornets conducted their Senior Nightfestivities in the tournament to honor Erica Smith, Karly Newell,Zach Smith, Quan Allen, Dayona Bank and Victoria Johnson withshowers of gifts.

The tournament continues Thursday at Loyd Star with the EnterpriseLady Jackets battling Wesson at 4 p.m. The St. Joseph Bruinsentertains Enterprise at 5:30. The Hinds AHS Lady Bulldogs tangleswith the Lady Bruins at 7, and the Bulldogs square off againstWesson at 8:30.

Wesson 56, Puckett 51

Junior guard Madison Rials pumped in a game-high 16 points to leadthe Lady Cobras (9-13). Elsie Miller gathered a double-double with13 points and 14 rebounds. Mackenzie Rials chipped in 10points.

“All of my girls stepped up and played tonight,” said Wesson coachRusti Magee. “This was a good win for us. The big difference of thegame was that we were able to make our free throws down thestretch.”

Junior guard Kathryn Neely was the leader for the Lady Wolves(12-13) with a team-high 14 points. Hannah Dearman contributed 13points.

“We did not execute very well in the fourth quarter and we lost ourfocus in the closing seconds,” said Puckett coach AntonioMagee.

Wesson 63, Puckett 51

Gib Britt provided a hot hand for the Cobras (10-11) scoring agame-high 31 points and collecting 5 steals. Terry Brown netted 15points and grabbed 5 rebounds

“This was a great game overall for us,” said Wesson coach RustyNewman. “We did a good job running the press and showed patience onoffense. Gib Britt had a good game for us as he set the tone for usearly in the first quarter. Overall, I am very proud of my guyseffort.”

Nate Simmons knocked down a team-high 15 points to lead the Wolves(2-13). Kewane Newsome contributed 13 points.

“We tried to make a comeback late in the fourth quarter, but weended up struggling as our shots would not fall,” said Puckettcoach Magee.

St. Joe 56, Loyd Star 39

Junior center Tyrisha Patterson was the leader for the Lady Hornets(7-19) with 24 points.

“We had a very good first half,” said Loyd Star coach Billy Vaughn.”We did not executed like we should in the third quarter and thatwas the turning point for us. I appreciate my seniors, Erica andKarly, they have done a lot for this program and they will bemissed.”

Junior guard Emily Moore pumped in a game-high 21 points to leadthe Lady Bruins (13-12). Arianna Cargin chipped in with 13 points.Corbin Divinity added 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

“We came to play,” said St. Joe coach Keith Barnes. “Loyd Starplayed us hard, We were fortunate to come away with the win.”

Enterprise 54, Loyd Star 47

Senior guard Thomas Allen was the sparkplug for the Jackets (6-23)scoring a game-high 23 points. Nathan Foster knocked down 16points. Senior forward Sam Furr contributed 11 points and grabbed 7rebounds.

“I am very proud of my guys for battling back,” said Enterprisecoach John Knight. “Loyd Star played hard and had a good firsthalf. We had to make some adjustment during the half and my guysexecuted well by getting them into foul trouble early in the secondhalf.”

Senior forward Zach Smith was the leader for the Hornets (4-18)with a team-high double-double 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomorecenter Terion Williams chipped with 13 points and gathered 5rebounds.

“We played very well in the first three quarters,” said Loyd Starcoach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “But in the fourth quarter, we got intofoul trouble and had a tough time getting our shots to fall at theend. Overall, the guys gave a good effort and battled hard.”
