“I think everybody should have a dog,” said center manager JayneWells.

With an adoption fee of $60, all the dogs will be vet-checked,current on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and have a microchipID.

“It’s a pretty good deal to get a dog for $60,” said Wells.

Wagging their tails will be two puppies along with nine otherdogs age 5 months or older. In addition to the companionship andsecurity that comes with owning any canine, adopting a more maturedog can sometimes be a little less hassle than a developingpuppy.

“They don’t have to go through puppy stuff,” said Wells of theleague’s older dogs.

BARL is a non-profit, no-kill, volunteer-based animal welfaregroup. The league receives no government funding and runs entirelyon private donations.

Adopting from the league can not only save someone a littleextra money, but can also impact a furry life.

“When you adopt from a rescue league, you’re saving a life,”said Wells. “You’re really saving two lives because it gives usroom to bring in another animal.”

Due to its no-kill philosophy, some of the animals are relocatedto other shelters with a similar policy. The Homeward Boundprogram, which is sponsored by Mississippi State University Collegeof Veterinary Medicine, will see nine of BARL’s dogs transported toStarkville and then to New York to seek adoption.

“It’s giving them another chance,” said Wells. “They’ve been toevery adoption event and for some reason have not been chosen.”

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in New Yorksaw a slideshow presentation of the dogs and decided to ship thefour-legged animals to the Big Apple.

Before moving, the dogs will be placed in foster care for twoweeks to become more socialized and to decrease the chance ofsickness brought on by recently received animals at theshelter.

“It gets them use to a home environment,” Wells said of theimportance of foster care.

Volunteers from the community have opened their homes to assistin the transport process. The dogs are scheduled to leaveBrookhaven by the end of the month.

In addition to saying good-bye to a few old friends and hostingthe adoption event, BARL will continue to collect ink and tonercartridges for their ongoing monthly fundraiser.

Those interested in recycling their cartridges can drop them offat City Mart II, which is located at 900 North Jackson St. BARL isable to raise roughly $200 a month from the fundraiser.

“That buys a lot of puppy and kitty chow,” joked Wells.
