BA Lady Cougars eliminate MRA

CLINTON- The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars came alive in thesecond half to overpower the Madison-Ridgeland Academy LadyPatriots 48-38 Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the MAISOverall Tournament in A.E. Woods Coliseum.
In the other girls’ game, the Jackson Academy Lady Patriotswalloped the Riverdale Lady Rebels 55-39.
In boys’ action, the Greenville Christian Saints stunned JacksonAcademy’s Raiders 48-42. The MRA Patriots defeated the West MemphisBlack Knights 64-50.
Tournament action continues Friday in the semifinals as the LadyCougars battle the Presbyterian Christian Lady Bobcats. Tipoff is2:15 p.m.
In other action, the Leake Rebelettes entertain Jackson Academy’sLady Raiders at 1. The Marshall Patriots tangle with MRA at 6 andthe Jackson Prep battles Greenville’s Saints at 7:15.
The championship finals are Saturday with the girls’ game at 1p.m., followed by the boys at 3:30.
Brookhaven Acad. 48, Madison-Ridgeland Acad. 38
The Lady Cougars and Lady Patriots struggled to get things going inthe first half as the score seesawed back-and-forth with MRA takinga 1-point lead, 20-19, into halftime.
Brookhaven came out and played Cougar basketball as they quicklyjumped on the Lady Patriots. The Cougars outscored MRA 29-18 in thesecond half.
Brookhaven had a little extra motivation for the game as theirfriend/teammate Callie Cole made a appearance to the Coliseum tosupport the Lady Cougars. Cole was injured in an auto accident inSeptember of 2009.
Senior center Anna Katelyn Mangold pumped in a game-high 16 pointsand grabbed 6 rebounds to lead the Cougars (29-4). Laura BethWright provided a offensive spark as she contributed 10 points, 6rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists. Mary Lindsey Magee was the leaderon the boards with 11 rebounds.
“The girls played hard,” said Brookhaven Academy coach Barry Gray.”We had to change up our defense in the second half to confuse MRAand we took advantage of the turnovers. We rebounded the ball a lotbetter in the second half. Overall, I am proud of the girls’effort.
“I would also like to thank God for his grace and mercy,” continuedGray. “He provides the miracles for us to see as he helped CallieCole come to see us play.”
The Lady Patriots got a team-high 16 points from Haley Cox.Caroline Kerley netted 10 points. Madison Ridgeland’s ladiesconcluded their season with a 29-11 record.
“It is tough to win, when you can not score in the low post,” saidMRA coach Stephen Force. “We had the opportunities, but our shotswould not fall. The overall factor of the game was that Brookhavenoutrebounded us in the second half.” Force’s team was outscored29-18 in the second half.
Jackson Acad. 55, Riverdale 39
Mandy Dace pumped in a team-high 14 points to lead the LadyPatriots (26-6) Mollie Blair contributed 11 points. Carly Chinn andBritt Ball provided 10 points apiece.
Taylor Giddings knocked down a team-high 14 points to lead the LadyRebels. Melissa Murray netted 10 points. Riverdale ended theirseason with a record of 27-7.
Greenville 48, Jackson Acad. 42
Mike Hardy was the leader for the Saints (34-4) with 14 points.Justin Leavy contributed 13 points and Harry Williams added12.
The Patriots received a team-high 16 points from Clayton Durfey.Bowmen Thigpen sacked 11 points and Ben Hansen added 10 points.Jackson Academy concludes their season with a 22-13worksheet.
MRA 64, West Memphis 50
Justin Malone pumped is a game-high 32 points to lead the Patriots(31-10). Kamry Owens contributed 17 points.
Davis Robilio knocked down a team-high 23 points to lead the BlackKnights. Grant Campbell netted 15 points. West Memphis finishedtheir season with 26-11 record.
