The Legislature won’t soon forget about Brookhaven.

City, county and business leaders from the Homeseekers Paradisewill travel to Jackson Tuesday for the 2011 Brookhaven Day at theCapitol, an annual event that puts local officialsshoulder-to-shoulder with Mississippi’s executive and legislativeleaders. This year’s Brookhaven Day at the Capitol will begin at 1 p.m. inthe first-floor Rotunda and end around 2:30 p.m. Anyone interestedin putting a good face on the community is invited to attend inbusiness attire.

The theme for this year’s event is “Get the Scoop on Brookhaven andLincoln County.”

Chamber officials will catch and meet lawmakers returning fromlunch with free ice cream served by Brookhaven’s Ice Cream Factory. The Mississippi School of the Arts choir will sing.

Brumfield said this year’s agenda includes an update on theprogress made at Linbrook Business Park, the city and county’s400-acre industrial site that is now up, running and ready for newindustries. Brookhaven Day at the Capitol has often been an eventused to update senior legislators on the county’s readiness for newbusiness projects.

The local delegation will also thank lawmakers for the death of abill that would have moved MSA out of Brookhaven to Columbus. Theschool has been the target of such a move for three consecutiveyears.

“We’re thankful to have that off the table. We want to continue toremind them of the benefit of having MSA, not just to our communitybut to the state.”

Whereas previous Capitol day events have seen long wish lists, local leaders are not asking for much in 2011.

“Really, we’re going to pick their brains, to try to get someinformation from them and sell Brookhaven as a good place to live,”said Brookhaven Mayor Les Bumgarner. “It’s not anything specific,we’re just going to put Brookhaven on display.”

Even though the delegation will consist of aldermen, supervisorsand businessmen, a unified front will be presented, said LincolnCounty Chancery Clerk Tillmon Bishop.

“The reason we do anything at the Capitol as a community is toimprove our relationship and understanding of our state government. The best way to do that is to do it as a community. You do ittogether,” he said.
