Loyd Star sacks Natchez

MONTICELLO – The Loyd Star Hornets overcame the fatigue from ared-eye special Monday night that lasted until after midnight, tobeat the Natchez Bulldogs, a class 6A school, for a 5-2 win Tuesdayafternoon on Jimmie Davis Park in Lawrence County’s Spring BreakBaseball Classic. The Hornets won Monday’s rain-delayed finale 8-6over Brookhaven.

“The guys played very well and gave a great effort,” said Loyd Starcoach Jonathan Breakfield. “Cori Crowe threw a good game as hemanaged to pitch a lot of strikes. Our defense did a great job bymaking the plays behind him.”

The Hornets (9-1) have completed their three-game series in theclassic winning two of three games. Loyd Star will take the rest ofthe week off to enjoy spring break before returning to actionTuesday, visiting the Enterprise Yellow Jackets for an importantdivision matchup.

Loyd Star 5, Natchez 2

The Hornets, slightly fresh from playing baseball 12-hours prior tothis game, fought hard to win this game as senior right-hander CoriCrowe was the winning pitcher on the mound collecting eightstrikeouts and allowing only one walk.

Javon Washington suffered the setback for the Bulldogs with twostrikeouts and no walks.

Corey Funk produced the offensive firepower for Loyd Star with twodoubles and a single. Crowe belted a inside the park home run.Hitting safely were Marquise Hayes, Korey Allen, Taylor Jones andBranden Canny.

Washington was the leader for the Bulldogs with a double and asingle. Natchez recorded singles from Tevon Chatman, Davion Ward,Alfred Banks and Darrain Johnson.
